The machine is disconnected and made safe, rigged and extracted, then transported, positioned, levelled and set down on its mounts. Some jobs call for a crane and a low loader. Access and planning for a machine move in Cardiff
Points we check on most Cardiff jobs:
- Getting loads in and out. The M4 is the main route, with the A48(M) and the A4232 peripheral road linking it to the estates and the Bay. M4 congestion affects timing, so we plan the hour as well as the route, and check low bridges and weight limits before we quote.
- Event days in the centre. Central roads close and fill with crowds on major event days. We check the city’s event dates at enquiry stage and book load-outs for a clear day.
- Floors and ground. Reclaimed land around the docks and the Bay, and cellars under older streets, need checking. We confirm what the slab or standing will carry and spread the load with plates or mats where the figures call for it.
- Shutdown dates. We ask how long production can stop and fit the whole move inside it, leaving time to set up and clear away.
- Road closures. Where a load-out needs part of a road or pavement, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Cardiff Council.
Moving large or heavy machinery by road
A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. Heavy loads from Cardiff reach the M4 by the A48(M) on the east side or the A4232 on the west.

Common questions
Can you move a process tool in a clean production area?
Yes. The tool travels on air bearings or skates over a protected floor, and we agree gowning, cleaning and the order of work with your facility before we start. The final position is measured against your marks and checked with you before handover.
Our unit is near the docks on reclaimed ground. Does that change the move?
It changes the checks. We find out what the slab and the yard will carry, then set crane positions and skate routes to suit and spread the load with mats or steel plates. Send us any drawings or ground reports you hold.
Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?
Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.
Can you move a machine that has broken down?
Yes. We prioritise breakdown work, because a stopped machine means stopped production. Call us with the machine details and we will give you a firm attendance time on the call.
