Access and planning for a factory move in Swansea

A run of loads onto the M4. The motorway runs along the top of the city between junctions 42 and 47, with the A483 coming in from junction 42 towards the centre. A relocation sends load after load over it, so tall and wide items have routes fixed first.
The receiving building on its dates. Machine bases, power, air and a clear way in have to be finished on the dates given, and we check the site against them.
How each machine leaves the old works. Shutter widths, headroom under crane beams, yard space and whether a roof panel can come off decide the method.
Slabs and standings at both ends. Skates and jacking concentrate a heavy load into a small footprint. Reclaimed land near the docks and SA1 takes mats under crane standings, and older floors get checked for pits.
Council permissions and oversized items. Where a load-out takes part of a road, we arrange the traffic management and closure with the City and County of Swansea, or with Neath Port Talbot or Carmarthenshire where the other end sits, and notify abnormal loads where needed.

Keeping production going during the move

Output carries on while the plant changes address. The lines you can spare travel first and run at the new site before the rest follows, and anything that can stop only briefly goes over a weekend or a booked shutdown. East of the city those windows are fixed well ahead, and we work back from them.

Common questions

We are moving from the Enterprise Park out to Neath. How do you track what goes where?

Each item is numbered at survey, with its weight, its route out and the position marked on the new layout. The label travels with the machine and both crews work from it.

Half our plant goes to a sister site in Europe and the rest stays nearby. Can that be one job?

Yes. One survey and one register cover both destinations, and the programme splits from there. Equipment going abroad is crated and case marked for the mode your freight forwarder has booked.

Can we keep producing while we move?

In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.

How are disconnection and recommissioning handled?

We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
