Overview
Steel erection in Stockport and across Greater Manchester
Manufacturers, engineers and distributors on Bredbury Park, in Reddish and on the other M60 estates bring us portal frames and extensions, and old mills need new floors whether they are becoming flats or still in work. Town-centre regeneration adds frames, light gauge framing and rooftop plant steel on cramped plots beside the railway and the river. Getting a crane down into the valley is the hard part, so we plan the approach first.
We erect portal frames and extensions made by your fabricator, and on the town-centre schemes the frames go up several storeys, right beside the railway. We cover Stockport, Bredbury, Reddish, Cheadle, Hazel Grove and Marple, and on to Poynton, Wilmslow and Glossop. From drawings and photographs of a unit extension, we quote the same working day.
What steel erection covers
We erect and bolt up the frame, true it up, and fit the bracing and secondary steel, with LFS and SFS light gauge framing where the design has it. Taking steel down is included, as when a mill floor is stripped for conversion.
What we do
What we erect in Stockport
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Light gauge infill framing (LFS and SFS) | Residential and commercial blocks in the town centre | Which floors are ready for framing, and how bundles reach them |
| Mezzanines and new floors | Mill buildings being converted | The load the old floor takes under each column |
| Portal frame units and workshops | Bredbury Park, Reddish and the M60 estates | How many set-ups the crane needs to reach every bay |
| Rooftop plant steel and platforms | Healthcare, school and public buildings | Occupied floors below and the hours the site allows |
| Extensions and added bays | Engineering and food buildings around the town | Existing columns and connections, surveyed before fabrication |
| Steel taken down | Mills and units being reorganised | Keeping the remainder stable, and match-marks on steel for reuse |
Each part of the work is described on the steel erection and dismantling service page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Stockport
The work runs from the valley floor out to the M60 estates.
Converted and working mills
New floors, mezzanines and platforms go into mills being turned into flats and mills still used as workshops, with every member brought through an existing opening or a cramped yard.
Bredbury Park and Reddish
Portal frame units, extensions and canopies go up for manufacturing, engineering and distribution firms on the M60 estates. See our industrial sector page.
Regeneration plots in the town centre
Frames, light gauge infill and rooftop plant steel go up on residential and commercial schemes around the town centre, on sloping plots with little room to lay steel down. See our construction sector page.
Healthcare, school and public buildings
Plant frames, access platforms and minor extensions are erected around people still using the building, or in the school holidays. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Food plants and utility sites
Platforms and support steel go into food and drink plants, and equipment frames are erected at substations and water treatment works during the outage the operator books. See our food and beverages and power and renewables pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Stockport
Before a Stockport frame is booked, we work through these:
- The last stretch for trailers. Trailers reach the edge of town easily on the M60. The descent to a valley-floor site, with its gradients, bends and low railway bridges, is what needs planning, and loads come in erection order, singly where there is no lay-down.
- A lift plan that fixes the loads. Crane positions and reach are planned before your fabricator schedules deliveries, so the loading follows the order the crane places each member.
- Slopes, culverts and made ground. A sloping street changes levelling and outrigger loads, and riverside ground by the Mersey and the Tame hides culverts and old foundations. Each set-up is confirmed and matted to suit.
- Road space on town-centre streets. Stockport Council grants the closure when a crane or trailer needs part of the carriageway, and we set out the traffic management and road closure.
- Wind on light members. On exposed plots towards Marple, LFS panels and slender sections swing in a breeze barely felt at ground level, so those lifts wait for the supervisor’s check.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
New steel here goes into buildings already standing, from a mill floor in Reddish to a unit on Bredbury Park that stays at work. The existing frame, or the mill’s own columns and beams, is surveyed before new steel is connected. With no crane access, members are carried up through an existing opening and lifted into place on the mill floor itself.
Existing steel comes down too, to reconfigure a building or reuse the frame. The dismantling order protects whatever stays up while each member is let go, and anything going back up is match-marked first for the new layout.

Why Synergy
Why Stockport firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Steel for mills and new blocks. Converted mills and new town-centre schemes get floors, frames and infill framing from our gangs.
- Framing in the order the trades need it. On town-centre blocks, light gauge framing goes up floor by floor in the order the envelope trades work to.
- Planned and erected by the same people. The lift plan is drawn up with the gang that rigs and bolts the steel, so crane positions and bolting order are settled together.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Stockport steel job also draws in:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
You give us the site address and programme dates, plus the drawings and steel schedule.
-
We visit to see the crane standings, the ground, how deliveries reach the plot, room for lay-down and overhead obstructions.
-
A lift plan from our appointed person comes next; the method statement and risk assessment built on it show how the frame is kept stable throughout.
-
Your fabricator loads to a delivery sequence we agree together.
-
Our gang stands the steel, braces, lines and levels it, and the frame is left ready for whoever follows.
FAQs
Common questions
We are adding a mezzanine inside a Reddish mill. How do you know the old floor will carry the new columns?
We look at the floor construction on site, and your structural engineer confirms what it takes under each baseplate before the steel is detailed. Spreader plates or new pads are designed in where the loads call for them.
Our frame goes up beside the railway. Does the line have to close?
Only if the crane, jib or steel could come within reach of it. Clearances come from the lift plan, and any possession is booked through the railway’s asset protection engineers before a date is fixed. Send a site plan marking the railway boundary.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

We price Stockport steel from the drawings, steel schedule and site address, with the weeks the frame is due to go up. Name the trade that follows the steel too, so the handover date is right.
