Overview
Steel erection in Manchester and across Greater Manchester
Manchester steel falls into two kinds of job. Tall residential and commercial schemes in the centre need light gauge framing, rooftop plant steel and canopies, and there the crane has few places to stand, with the Metrolink often close by. Manufacturers and distribution firms on Trafford Park and by the Ship Canal want portal frames, extensions and mezzanines, and on those estates the made ground matters more.
We lift and erect fabricated steel anywhere in Greater Manchester, from Eccles and Altrincham across to Bury, Oldham and Stockport. With drawings and photographs, a new unit on Trafford Park is normally priced within the working day.
What steel erection covers
Our gangs stand the columns and rafters, bolt up, line and level, then fit bracing and secondary steel, plus any LFS or SFS framing. Dismantling is part of the service, for a unit being refitted or steel going to another site. On Trafford Park the tenant’s machinery move tends to come on the same order as the frame.
What we do
What we erect in Manchester
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| LFS and SFS infill walls | Residential and office towers in the centre | Landing bundles on each floor ahead of the envelope trades |
| Rooftop plant steel and canopies | Commercial buildings and new schemes | Crane reach from the street and when the road is free |
| Portal frames and added bays | Trafford Park and the Ship Canal estates | Crane set-ups along the building and the order bays are braced |
| Mezzanine floors | Distribution and food units across Greater Manchester | Door openings and what the slab carries at each column |
| Plant platforms and access steel | Hospital, university and data hall buildings | Live services around the steel and agreed working hours |
| Steel taken down | Units being refitted or vacated | Keeping the frame stable as it comes apart, and marking pieces for reuse |
The method in full is on our steel erection and dismantling service page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Manchester
Most enquiries come from these kinds of site.
Towers from Deansgate to Ancoats
Light gauge infill, rooftop plant frames and entrance canopies go onto high-rise schemes where the neighbours sit hard against the site. See our construction sector page.
New units and bays across Trafford Park
Portal frames, lean-tos and extensions go up for manufacturers and trade firms on Trafford Park and the canal-side estates, where yards and estate roads are shared with the firms next door. See our industrial sector page.
Plant decks on hospital and campus buildings
Chiller platforms, access walkways and link steel are added to clinical and teaching buildings that stay open. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Salford Quays and the waterside
Canopies, plant frames and internal platforms are erected at occupied buildings around the Quays, where the quay edges limit where a crane can stand.
Process floors for food and drink makers
When a food or drink plant in the county adds a line, the mezzanine or platform it stands on is erected in a short shutdown. See our food and beverages page.
Generator and chiller steel for data halls
Support frames for generators and cooling plant are erected at data centres and substations inside fixed windows. See our data centre infrastructure page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Manchester
These points go into the plan before any Manchester steel leaves the fabricator:
- Council permits and the Metrolink. Where the crane stands on the road, we apply to whichever of the Greater Manchester councils covers the address and set up the traffic management and road closure. Beside the Metrolink, we agree clearance from the tram wires, or an isolation, with the operator well ahead.
- Crane positions settled at the design stage. Our appointed person fixes where the crane stands and what it places from each spot while the steel is still being detailed, so the fabricator can load to suit.
- Deliveries called off in lifting order. Loading restrictions and bus lanes leave little space to stop in the centre, so trailers arrive one at a time with members stacked in the order they go up.
- Temporary stability. At the end of each day the part-built frame must stand unaided, so temporary braces or guys stay in until the permanent bracing catches up.
- Wind at height. Big LFS panels and light members catch far more wind at the top of a tower than at street level, so they go up on calmer days, with a gust reading taken at height before each lift.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Adding steel to a Manchester building that stays open begins with a check of the existing frame and its connections. In an Openshaw warehouse the new mezzanine goes up under the roof from the floor, with the rest of the building still picking orders behind a barrier.
Members due to be re-erected get their match-marks first. The frame then comes apart bay by bay, in an order that leaves what remains braced.

Why Synergy
Why Manchester firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Light gauge framing for the towers. We erect LFS and SFS infill floor by floor on central residential and office schemes, in the order the envelope trades need it.
- Portal frames on Trafford Park. We put up units, extra bays and mezzanines for firms across the industrial west of the city.
- Our lift planner works with the erectors. The gang who rig and bolt follow that plan on site, member by member.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Manchester steel work can link to these services:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Our planners need your drawings, the steel schedule, where the site is and the programme.
-
A site visit covers where cranes can stand, ground conditions, delivery access, room for lay-down and any cables overhead.
-
The appointed person then writes the lift plan. Our method statement and risk assessment follow from it and show how the frame stays stable at each stage.
-
Your fabricator and our planner agree which steel travels on each load.
-
The gang erects, braces, lines and levels the steel, then the frame is released to the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our tower in the Northern Quarter needs SFS infill on every floor. How do the bundles reach each level?
The crane lands them onto loading platforms or open slab edges, floor by floor, in the order the walls are built. On a central street those lifts are planned for the hours the road can be closed, including evenings and Sundays.
Our building at Salford Quays has one approach road. How do deliveries work?
Trailers are held back and called forward singly as the crane is ready, each carrying the next members in sequence. We agree the times with the estate management so the road stays open for everyone else.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Along with the general arrangement drawings, tell us the district the site is in and whether the crane would stand on the street or inside the site, and the dates booked for the steel, so the council application can start early.
