Overview
Steel erection in Ipswich and across Suffolk
Ipswich steel follows the freight on the A14: distribution sheds, loading canopies and pick mezzanines for logistics firms trading in and out of Felixstowe. Engineering and trade businesses on Ransomes Europark and at Whitehouse add units and extensions, and farming and food businesses across Suffolk need grain stores and packhouses.
Alongside the distribution sheds we put up mezzanines, canopies and platform steel, and we lift the frames for the bigger cross-dock sheds too. Work comes from Kesgrave, Woodbridge and Felixstowe on the east side, from Stowmarket and Hadleigh to the west, and from Colchester over the Essex border. A straightforward portal frame, sent with drawings and photographs, can often be priced on the day it arrives.
What steel erection covers
Our gang erects the steel your fabricator delivers. We stand and bolt the frame, line and level it, and fit the bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. Frames can also be taken apart so the steel can be rearranged or used again. Packhouse and grain store owners often have us sheet the building once the frame is up.
What we do
What we erect in Ipswich
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution and cross-dock frames | Plots along the A14 towards Felixstowe | Crane runs down each long elevation and the delivery slots on a working park |
| Mezzanines and pick floors | Sheds on the logistics parks that keep trading | Stock and forklift routes kept open beneath |
| Units and added bays | Ransomes Europark and Whitehouse | The condition of the frame the new bays join |
| Grain stores and packhouses | Farms and food sites across Suffolk | Standing for the crane in a farm yard |
| Canopies and light gauge framing | Waterfront and town-centre schemes | Reach from a standing hemmed in by the quay and the road |
| Frames taken down | Buildings being altered or relocated | Which members hold the rest up, released last, and match-marks for reuse |
Our steel erection and dismantling page explains each stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Ipswich
We are asked for steel on six kinds of Ipswich site.
Distribution sheds between Ipswich and Felixstowe
Portal frames, loading canopies and pick mezzanines go up for the logistics businesses feeding the container traffic, while the parks keep trading. See our industrial sector page.
Units and added bays on the town’s estates
New units, extensions and plant platforms are built for engineering and trade firms on Ransomes Europark, east of the town, and at Whitehouse to the north west. See our construction sector page.
Storage sheds near the port
Sheds and access steel are erected for cargo and agricultural bulk businesses beside the Orwell, working to the dock estate’s security and access rules. See our maritime sector page.
Grain, feed and packing sites
Grain stores and packhouses go up on Suffolk farms between harvests, and access platforms go into mills and food plants during short shutdowns. See our food and beverages page.
Frames on the waterfront and in the town
Residential and commercial schemes around the wet dock and in the town centre take frames, canopies and light gauge infill walls.
Substations and the energy supply chain
Equipment platforms and support frames go in at substations and for firms serving the offshore wind farms off the Suffolk coast. See our power and renewables page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Ipswich
Before a crane arrives in Ipswich, we settle these:
- Crane standings on the drawings. Our appointed person marks each crane position and what it reaches while the steel is still to be ordered, which lets the fabricator plan deliveries around them.
- The Orwell Bridge in high wind. When gales shut the bridge, the A14’s lorries are pushed onto the town roads. With strong wind forecast we move delivery slots and plan the trailers’ route through Ipswich, and the same wind decides whether large panels go up that day.
- Deliveries off the A14 and A12. Loads leave the fabricator packed in erection sequence, and on a busy park with no spare yard the crane takes each member straight from the wagon.
- Low ground along the Orwell. Waterfront plots sit on made ground and old quay structures, so bearing is confirmed under every outrigger and mats sized to the load.
- Road space from Suffolk County Council. If a lift or delivery takes up part of a road, we apply for the closure and provide the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Food plants and workshops around Ipswich keep running while a platform or new floor goes in. Where the new steel meets the existing frame, we check those columns and connections before anything is detailed. Members come in through a dock door, and without crane access they are lifted on gantries and jacks or by the electric pick and carry crane, which runs safely indoors beside a working line.
When a tenant moves, the mezzanine can go too. The deck and joists come off first, then the beams and columns, with props under anything that would be left loose, and each piece is numbered against a drawing so it goes back together in the new shed.

Why Synergy
Why Ipswich firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Pick floors and canopies for the A14 sheds. Mezzanines, loading canopies and added bays go up on distribution parks between Ipswich and Felixstowe while the loading carries on.
- Grain stores and packhouses out in the county. Portal frames for Suffolk farms and food businesses go up once the crane standing and the trailer route across the yard have been checked.
- Lifting and erecting by one team. The gang working to our appointed person’s lift plan rigs and bolts up every member itself.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

Process
How a steel erection job works
-
First, email us the drawings, the steel schedule, the address and the programme.
-
A site visit follows, covering crane positions, ground, access for trailers, lay-down and overhead lines.
-
With that done, the lift plan is written, and our method statement and risk assessment deal with temporary stability.
-
Your fabricator and our planner agree the order each load is sent.
-
On site the gang erects, braces, lines and levels the steel before the next trade moves in.
FAQs
Common questions
We are adding bays to our unit at Whitehouse. Can we keep working inside?
Yes. The new bays go up outside against the old gable, and the gable comes out only once the new steel is braced and closed in, on a day we agree with you. Photographs of the gable and any old drawings help.
Can a mezzanine go into our distribution shed while it keeps trading?
Yes. We fence off the aisles under the new floor, bring the steel in through a loading door at quieter times, and your pickers keep working the rest of the shed.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
