Overview
Steel erection in Norwich and across Norfolk
In Norwich we put up steel for manufacturers on Broadland Business Park and around Hellesdon and Sprowston, and for food processors and packhouses across the county. Inside the medieval centre, residential, student and commercial schemes take frames and infill walling on tight plots that a lorry can reach only one way. On the coast, energy businesses at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft need stores and platforms.
The work runs from portal sheds and mezzanines to canopies and platform steel, and the stores at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft are often bigger buildings of several bays. Our gangs cover the city from Costessey to Thorpe St Andrew, Wymondham to the south west, and the rest of Norfolk out to King’s Lynn and the coast. For a packhouse or a new unit at Broadland, drawings and a few photographs will often get you a price that working day.
What steel erection covers
Our gang erects steel your fabricator has made. The main frame is stood, bolted, lined and levelled, and the bracing, secondary members and any light gauge framing follow. Old steel can be taken down to be rearranged or reused. A food processor can have us sheet the new building and lift the line equipment in as well.
What we do
What we erect in Norwich
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Light gauge framing and infill walls | Residential, student and commercial blocks within the old city | How bundles reach each floor through one way in |
| Factory and workshop frames | Broadland Business Park, Hellesdon and Sprowston | Where the crane sets up along each side of the building |
| Packhouse and crop store frames | Food and farm sites across Norfolk | The harvest calendar and a clear run in for trailers |
| Plant decks and small extensions | Laboratories and offices that stay occupied | People working beside the new steel and the hours the building allows |
| Stores and access platforms | Quayside plots at Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft | Vessel movements and the quay edge |
| Steel taken down for reuse | Buildings being altered or cleared | Props for what stays, and match-marks on anything going back up |
How each stage runs is set out on our steel erection and dismantling page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Norwich
Our Norwich jobs fall into five groups.
Factory units outside the ring road
Engineering, vehicle and component manufacturers on Broadland Business Park and the estates at Hellesdon and Sprowston take on new portal frame units, extensions and mezzanines. See our industrial sector and automotive pages.
Small plots inside the old city
Residential and student schemes on sites with one way in and listed neighbours need canopies, small frames and light gauge walling. See our construction sector page.
Plant decks on occupied buildings
Extensions, plant decks and internal platforms are added to laboratory, office and healthcare buildings while they carry on working, with lift times set by the building managers. See our healthcare and pharma page.
Packhouses and mills across Norfolk
Crop stores and packhouse frames go up for growers and food firms, timed to the season. See our food and beverages page.
Stores and platforms on the east coast
Stores, workshops and access platforms are erected for the oil, gas and offshore wind operators working from the two harbours. See our power and renewables and maritime sector pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Norwich
Norfolk roads and the old city streets drive the planning on a Norwich frame:
- Lanes and Norfolk County Council. Central streets are narrow enough that the crane or a parked trailer usually closes one, so we apply to Norfolk County Council and provide the traffic management and road closure, and where the jib oversails a listed roof the owner’s agreement goes into the plan.
- Soft ground by the rivers. Plots beside the Wensum and the Yare are low and wet, and out towards the Broads there is peat, so bearing is checked at each crane position and the mats sized to it.
- Trailers on the A11 and A47. No motorway reaches Norfolk and parts of the A47 are still single carriageway, so each load leaves the fabricator in erection order with a set arrival time. On a city plot with nowhere to put steel down, members are picked off the bed as the wagon arrives.
- An early lift plan. Our appointed person writes it before the steel order is placed, so the crane positions decide how the fabricator batches the deliveries.
- Temporary bracing and guys. Each stage of the frame is left stable, with permanent bracing where the sequence reaches it and temporary members everywhere else.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
When a mezzanine goes into a Hellesdon trade unit that stays open, the new steel usually bolts onto an old frame, so that frame gets surveyed first. Steel out of a crane’s reach is raised indoors by the electric pick and carry crane, and because it gives off no exhaust, staff carry on working nearby.
Dismantling runs to a written sequence too. Before anything is unbolted we decide what props or temporary bracing the remaining frame needs, and every piece you plan to put back up elsewhere is marked with its gridline and position.

Why Synergy
Why Norwich firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Packhouses and crop stores for growers. Frames on Norfolk farms are booked around harvest, and platforms inside food plants around the production run.
- Units and bays for manufacturers. Engineering and component firms on Broadland Business Park and around Hellesdon get new units, added bays and mezzanines from us.
- Planning and erecting under one roof. Our appointed person plans each lift, and the gang that rigs the steel also bolts it together.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Norwich steel project can also bring in:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Drawings and the steel schedule reach us, along with the address and your target dates.
-
We look over the site for crane standings, ground conditions, the way in for trailers, lay-down room and overhead cables.
-
The lift plan comes from our appointed person, with a method statement and risk assessment explaining how the part-built frame stays stable.
-
Your fabricator loads and dispatches to a delivery order we settle together.
-
The frame goes up and is braced, lined and levelled before the next trade takes the site.
FAQs
Common questions
Our extension bolts onto an older unit off the ring road. Will you check the existing steel?
Yes. Before your fabricator starts, we measure the old columns and connections where the new steel meets them and report their condition to your engineer, who signs off the joint. Any original drawings help.
Do you put up packhouse and crop store frames out in Norfolk?
Yes, across the county. On a farm the crane needs firm standing and a clear way in for the trailers, so tell us about the track and the yard when you send the drawings.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

For Norwich, the steel drawings and a list of the members come first, then the site address and the weeks set aside for the steel. On a plot in the old city, a photograph of the street at the entrance shows us which crane will fit.
We also provide steel erection in Ipswich, Cambridge, Peterborough and Grimsby. See all the steel erection locations.
