The machine is disconnected and made safe, rigged and extracted, transported, then positioned, levelled and set down on its mounts. Access and planning for a machine move in Bristol

Getting loads in and out. The M5 at junctions 17 to 19 serves Avonmouth, Severnside and the north fringe, the M32 runs into the centre and the M4 heads east. Every vehicle is checked against the central Clean Air Zone, and we look at low bridges and weight limits before we quote.
Gradients and river crossings. Steep central streets change where a crane can level up, and the gorge and the river limit which crossings a heavy load can take.
Made ground and cellars. Dock and harbourside land is reclaimed, and older central buildings sit over cellars. We confirm what the floor or ground will carry before fixing a skate route or outrigger position.
Stop and restart dates. We agree when the machine goes off, when you need it running again and our hours on the floor.
Road closures. Where a load-out needs part of a road or pavement, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire Council or North Somerset Council.

Moving large or heavy machinery by road

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. From Bristol, heavy loads join the M5 at Avonmouth or pick up the M4 and M5 at Almondsbury.

Common questions

Can you work inside the docks at Avonmouth or Portbury?

Yes. We complete the port induction, carry the terminal’s permits and follow its vehicle rules. Tell us which yard the machine is in and when it must reach the vessel or trailer.

Can you relocate our whole works to a new unit?

Yes. We survey both buildings, agree the order the machines leave and arrive, and move them in stages so the ones you need first are running first at the new site. That applies across the city, out to Severnside or over the Severn into south Wales.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?
