Overview

Steel erection in Sheffield and across South Yorkshire

Engineering firms in the Don Valley add bays and platform steel to works that stay in production. In the centre, student and commercial schemes take light gauge walls and canopies, and the trade units off the M1 around Tinsley and Rotherham need portal frames and mezzanine floors. On many Sheffield plots the slope of the ground decides where the crane can stand.

We plan the lifts and erect the steel your fabricator makes. Our gangs work across the city and out to Chapeltown, Mosborough, Rotherham, Barnsley and Chesterfield. Email drawings and a few pictures of the plot, and a trade unit off the M1 can usually be priced before the end of the working day.

What steel erection covers

We stand the frame, bolt it up, bring it to line and level, and fit the bracing and secondary steel, along with LFS and SFS light gauge framing. Old bays come out of Don Valley works too, when a shop floor is laid out again. A works adding a bay can also have us sheet it and lift the new machine onto its base.

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Sheffield

Sheffield steel goes up on sites like these.

Inside the forges and machine shops of the Don Valley

Operator platforms, walkways and heavy support steel for presses and process plant go into older works buildings, often under a low roof. See our plastics and metals page.

    Trade parks beside the M1

New portal frame units, extensions and canopies over loading doors go up on open plots off the motorway. See our industrial sector page.

    Hillside schemes near the universities

Canopies, light gauge infill and rooftop plant steel are erected on residential and teaching buildings between the centre and the university quarter, on cramped plots with little room at the kerb. See our construction sector page.

Roof decks for hospitals and research labs

Chiller platforms and access steel are added to hospital and laboratory buildings that stay open, with lifts booked around clinics and teaching hours. See our healthcare and pharma page.

Production floors for South Yorkshire food makers

Mezzanines and platforms for new lines go into food and drink plants in a shutdown, erected to the hygiene rules of each area. See our food and beverages page.

    Substations and energy sites

Equipment frames and access platforms at substations and energy sites go up in the outage windows the operator gives us. See our power and renewables page.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Sheffield

Before any steel is loaded for a Sheffield job, we settle these points:

    • A lift plan ahead of the steel order. Our appointed person sets each crane position and what it can place, so your fabricator can load the trailers to match.
    • Slopes and old ground. A sloping yard changes how the crane is levelled, and the valley floor hides culverts and old footings. Outrigger positions are checked and mats sized for each set-up.
    • The Supertram and the council. Where the crane or a trailer needs part of a street, we apply to Sheffield City Council and run the traffic management and road closure. Near the Supertram, clearance from the overhead line, or an isolation, is agreed before the date.
    • A frame that stands between shifts. The sequence leaves the steel stable whenever work stops, with raking props or guy wires on any bay whose permanent bracing comes later.
    • Loads in the order they go up. On a works yard with little room to land steel, each trailer brings the next run of members and they are lifted straight off it.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

When new steel is bolted to a Sheffield works that keeps producing, we first look over the old columns and connections it will hang from. In a working machine shop in Darnall, where a crane cannot get in, members are lifted from the shop floor by the electric pick and carry crane.

A frame leaving one works to go up at another is match-marked member by member while it still stands. It then comes down in a sequence that keeps the remaining bays braced as each piece is freed.

    Why Synergy

Why Sheffield firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Platforms around running plant. Walkways and operator platforms go in beside presses that stay in production.
    • One team plans the lifts and erects the steel. The appointed person and the erectors work together, so the crane positions on paper are the ones used on site.
    • New frames by the M1. Portal frames, canopies and mezzanines go up for trade and distribution firms on the parks off the motorway.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. You send the drawings and steel schedule, the site address and the dates in your programme.

    2. We visit to fix the crane standings, check the ground and any slope, the way in for trailers, lay-down room and overhead cables.

    3. A lift plan follows from the appointed person, with a method statement and risk assessment that set out temporary stability.

    4. Your fabricator loads to a delivery order we agree together.

    5. We erect the steel, brace it, check it for line and level, and pass the frame on to the following trade.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Yes, with the working windows agreed. The overhead crane is parked and isolated while members are lifted near its path, and otherwise your shop carries on. The steel is planned around its hook height and travel.

For most of the job, yes. The new frame goes up outside the existing wall and is braced and sheeted before any cladding between old and new comes off, so the shop runs behind it until the final tie-in, which we time for a weekend or your shutdown.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
