Overview
Steel erection in Portsmouth and south east Hampshire
Portsmouth steel goes up on tight plots across Portsea Island, where the crane often has to stand in the road, and on roomier estates at Hilsea, at the north end of the island, and over on the mainland at Portchester, Fareham and Havant. Around the harbour, boatbuilders and marine engineers add sheds and workshop bays.
The frames range from boat sheds and canopies to light gauge walling, and on the mainland estates a distribution warehouse with a long run of bays. We erect across Southsea, Fratton and Cosham, Gosport and Lee-on-the-Solent, and out to Waterlooville, Emsworth, Chichester and Petersfield. Send drawings and photographs of a simple shed in the morning and the price can reach you that afternoon.
What steel erection covers
We erect steel from your fabricator: frames, bolting up, lining and levelling, bracing and secondary steel, and light gauge LFS or SFS framing. Existing steel is dismantled where that is the job, which around the harbour often means a boat shed cleared to make room for a bigger one.
What we do
What we erect in Portsmouth
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Boat sheds and marine workshops | Yards around the harbour and at Gosport | Clear height at the big doors and any crane rail inside |
| Frames and canopies for new blocks | Residential and commercial schemes in Southsea and the city centre | Which members each lift position covers |
| Unit extensions and new bays | Estates at Hilsea, Portchester and Havant | The survey of the columns being tied into |
| Mezzanine floors | Trade and engineering units on the mainland side | Loading door width and the slab under each column |
| Rooftop plant platforms | Health, teaching and public buildings | Bearing points on the roof below and permitted working hours |
| Frames dismantled for reuse | Marine and industrial units being reorganised | Stability as each member is released, and the match-marks |
Every stage is described on our steel erection and dismantling page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Portsmouth
On and off the island, Portsmouth steel goes up in these places.
Boatbuilding sheds around the harbour
New sheds, workshop bays and platform steel go up for boatbuilders and marine engineers at Gosport, Portchester and along the harbour edge. See our maritime sector page.
Bays and mezzanines at Hilsea and Havant
Extensions, lean-tos and storage floors are added to manufacturing, engineering and trade units, most of them staying in use while the steel goes up. See our industrial sector page.
Island plots in Southsea and the centre
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill walls are erected on residential and commercial schemes across Southsea, Fratton and the city centre. See our construction sector page.
Portal frames on the Fareham side
New units and workshops go up on the estates around Fareham, on open plots where the crane can move down the length of the building.
Chiller frames on clinics, colleges and council buildings
Swapping old cooling or ventilation plant can mean a new frame on the roof, and small extensions are added too. The buildings stay open, so the estates team agrees the hours before any lift is booked. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Portsmouth
On a Portsmouth job the following are worked through before any steel is loaded:
- Timed crossings onto the island. All three road bridges onto Portsea Island queue at busy times, so trailers are timed to miss the worst of it, packed in erection order and lifted straight off the bed on plots too cramped to stack steel.
- Positions agreed with the fabricator’s detailer. Our appointed person fixes where the crane stands and what it places from each position before the steel is detailed, so the loads match the lifts.
- Part-built frames made safe. Any bay left open at the end of a shift is held by temporary bracing or guys until the permanent bracing goes in.
- Solent exposure. Harbour-side yards and seafront plots take the wind off the Solent, so large panels and light members are lifted only when the gusts at height allow.
- Road space on the island and beyond. We apply to Portsmouth City Council for the closure and any parking suspension, or to Hampshire County Council once the site is beyond the city boundary, and our crew sets out the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Steel added to a Havant engineering unit goes in around a business that keeps working, so each delivery is planned around its yard. Before anything bolts to the old frame, its members and connections are surveyed. Inside, the mezzanine goes up under the existing roof, with its steel carried in past the machine tools.
When steel has to come out, the removal sequence protects what is left standing, with each member supported until it is free. Anything being reused is match-marked beforehand, which matters when a mezzanine from a Hilsea unit is going up again across the harbour.

Why Synergy
Why Portsmouth firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Sheds and bays for the marine trade. Boatbuilders and marine engineers around the harbour and at Gosport come to us for new sheds, workshop extensions and platform steel.
- Frames for island schemes. Contractors building in Southsea and the city centre use us for frames, canopies and infill walls.
- Crane positions set by our own planner. Our appointed person works with the gang who rig and bolt each member, so the crane positions and the erection order match on the day.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Portsmouth steel jobs can draw on these as well:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Everything starts with the drawings, the site address and the dates you need the frame up.
-
Next is a site visit covering crane positions, ground conditions, how trailers reach the plot, lay-down room and overhead lines.
-
The appointed person’s lift plan comes after that, together with the method statement, the risk assessment and the temporary works that keep the frame stable.
-
Your fabricator and our planner fix the sequence the loads are packed in.
-
With the steel on site, our gang raises each bay, braces it, lines and levels the frame, and the frame passes to the following trade, or to our own crew if we are cladding it too.
FAQs
Common questions
Our boat shed at Gosport needs taller doors in a new bay. Can the extension tie into the existing frame?
Yes, once the existing columns, rafters and connections are surveyed. Your engineer designs the tie-in from what we find, and the new bay stands on temporary bracing until it is connected to the old frame.
Our plot is on the Southsea seafront. Does the wind change the programme?
It can. Large panels and light members are lifted only in wind speeds the lift plan allows, so exposed plots get spare days in the sequence and the forecast is checked before each lift.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Say whether the plot is on Portsea Island or the mainland, and send the drawings, full address and programme dates. For an island site, a photograph looking along the street shows us where the crane can set up.
