Overview

Steel erection in Bournemouth and across Dorset

Bournemouth hotels need steel for new rooftop plant, while marine, aerospace and engineering firms around Poole Harbour and on the Ferndown and Poole estates need units, added bays and mezzanines. Coastal schemes bring frames and canopies, and on a sloping cliff-top plot the crane often has to work from the road.

Most of what we put up is portal frames, mezzanines and plant support steel on hotel roofs. Bigger jobs include tall boatbuilding halls on the Poole side, stood from a crane set up in the yard. The work runs across Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch and out to Wimborne, Ringwood and Swanage. A straightforward portal frame gets a price back the day its drawings and photographs reach us.

What steel erection covers

Our gang erects what your fabricator makes: the main members, bolted up and lined and levelled, along with bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS light gauge framing. We also take existing frames apart when an estate unit changes layout.

What we do

What we erect in Bournemouth

Structure Where it goes up What sets the method
Support steel for replacement hotel plant Hotel and conference buildings near the seafront Bearing points on the existing roof, and the hours the hotel can give
Boatbuilding halls and workshop bays Yards and marine firms on the Poole side of the harbour Crane standings in the yard and the bays each one reaches
Mezzanines and test platforms Electronics and precision engineering units across the conurbation Finished floors, and what the slab takes under each baseplate
Portal frame units and added bays Manufacturing estates in Poole and Ferndown Crane positions along the plot and the bay erected first
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill Residential and commercial schemes along the coast Reach from the crane position, and when each floor is handed over for framing
Steel taken down for reuse Units on the estates changing layout The order members come out in, with each piece marked for re-erection

The steel erection and dismantling service page covers each stage.

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Bournemouth

Seafront buildings and the industrial side of the conurbation each bring their own kind of frame.

    Boatbuilding halls around Poole Harbour

Halls, workshop bays and lean-tos go up for boatbuilders and repairers on the harbour, with the crane set up in the yard. See our maritime sector page.

    Chiller frames on seafront hotels

Hotel and conference buildings replacing their chillers or air handling units get new support frames, with lifts booked out of season so rooms stay let. See our HVAC sector page.

Apartment and commercial schemes along the coast

Frames, canopies and infill walls in light gauge steel are put up on plots between Southbourne and Branksome once the slab is ready. See our construction sector page.

    Mezzanines in precision engineering units

Mezzanine floors and test platforms go into aerospace, electronics and precision engineering units across the conurbation, with members brought in over finished floors. See our aerospace sector page.

Units and bays on the Ferndown and Poole estates

Portal frame units, extra bays and loading door canopies go up for manufacturers and trade businesses there. See our industrial sector page.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Bournemouth

These go into the method before a Bournemouth erection date is agreed:

    • Sea breeze on light steel. A light gauge panel or a long purlin catches the wind well below the crane’s own limit, so the supervisor sets a lower wind limit for those picks, and cliff-top plots take the stronger gusts.
    • Closures from the right council. If the crane or a trailer needs road or pavement, we apply to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, or to Dorset Council at Ferndown, Wimborne and Verwood, and set up the traffic management and road closure.
    • Sand and cliff-top ground. Cliff-top plots sit on sand, and harbourside units in Poole stand on reclaimed or made ground. Outrigger loads are checked at every crane position and spread on mats.
    • A stable part-frame at each pause. Whenever the gang stops, the steel already up must stand alone, with temporary bracing or guys where permanent bracing comes later.
    • Deliveries matched to the lifting sequence. Each trailer from the fabricator carries the members in the order they go up, so a yard with little lay-down still works.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

New steel often goes into a Boscombe hotel or a Ferndown factory while it keeps trading. The existing frame is surveyed first and each connection checked before anything is fabricated. Mezzanines and platforms that no crane can reach are brought in at a door and lifted on gantries and jacking equipment, or placed with the electric pick and carry crane, which leaves the air in the building clean.

Existing steel comes down too, when a unit is reconfigured or a frame is moving. Members are released in an order that leaves the remaining structure stable, and anything going back up is match-marked as it comes down.

    Why Synergy

Why Bournemouth firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Steel for buildings that keep trading. Hotels, venues and occupied buildings are normal working for us, with lifts timed around the business.
    • Frames and floors for harbour and estate firms. Boat sheds, workshop bays and mezzanines go up for marine, aerospace and engineering businesses.
    • Lift planning and erection in one team. The appointed person’s lift plan and the erection sequence are worked out together, and the operatives who rig each member also bolt it home.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. Pricing starts when we have your drawings, with the steel schedule if there is one, where the site is and the dates you are working to.

    2. A site visit covers where the crane can stand, the ground, how trailers get in, lay-down room and any overhead lines.

    3. The appointed person writes the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment set out how the frame stays stable at each stage.

    4. With your fabricator we fix the loading order, so members arrive in the sequence they are lifted.

    5. The gang erects and braces the steel, lines and levels it, and passes the finished frame to the following trade.

    FAQs

    Common questions

It decides how the crane is set up. Reclaimed and made ground can vary across one plot, so the bearing is checked at each standing and the mats matched to the outrigger loads. Any site investigation you hold helps.

Once the new plant is chosen. The roof is surveyed and the lift plan written in time for the steel to go up out of season, with early lifts if the hotel is open.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
