Overview
Steel erection in Dover and across Kent
Port businesses in Dover need sheds, canopies and platform steel on land beside the harbour, and manufacturers on the Whitfield and Aycliffe estates need new units, bays and mezzanines. Schools, hospitals and utility sites across east Kent add plant steel and small extensions. Port traffic backing up on the A2 and A20 decides when trailers can reach town, so delivery times are fixed early.
Portal frames, mezzanines and canopies make up most of the work. The bigger frames come from the port side, where sheds of several bays go up on open ground by the harbour. Our gangs work across Dover, Deal and Folkestone and out to Sandwich, Thanet, Canterbury and Ashford. A same-day price is usual on a straightforward portal frame, worked from drawings and photographs.
What steel erection covers
Our gang erects steel your fabricator has made: the main frame, bolted, lined and levelled, the bracing and secondary members, and LFS or SFS light gauge framing. We take old frames down as well, such as a harbourside canopy being replaced.
What we do
What we erect in Dover
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Canopies and covered loading bays | Freight and logistics yards serving the port | Vehicles moving under the new steel, and the hours the yard can spare |
| Portal frame units and workshops | New plots at Whitfield and Aycliffe | The gable the sequence starts from and the braced bay beside it |
| Mezzanines and internal platforms | Manufacturing units towards Sandwich and Canterbury | Machinery running beside the new columns |
| Platforms and equipment frames | Substations, water treatment works and rail sites | Outage or possession windows |
| Roof steel for replacement plant | Schools, clinics and council buildings around the town | Connections to the existing roof, worked in the building’s quiet hours |
| Frames dismantled for a new layout | Units being reorganised across east Kent | The release order, and a mark on every piece going back up |
The steel erection and dismantling service page sets out every stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Dover
Around Dover, these are the places new steel is wanted.
Equipment frames inside outage windows
Equipment frames, access platforms and small plant buildings go up at substations and water treatment sites and beside the railway, in whatever outage or possession the operator gives. See our power and renewables and rail sector pages.
Cargo sheds by the harbour
Storage sheds, canopies and platform steel go up for firms handling cargo, fitted around each site’s security and induction rules. See our maritime sector page.
Frames and mezzanines at Whitfield and Aycliffe
Portal frame units, added bays and mezzanine floors go up for manufacturers, engineers and trade businesses on the high ground above the town. See our industrial sector page.
Infill and canopies in the town centre
Canopies, infill framing and small frames go into town-centre and seafront schemes, tied to buildings that stay. See our construction sector page.
Plant steel for schools and hospitals
Roof platforms and link steel are added to school, college and hospital buildings, in a holiday or at hours the site sets. See our education and healthcare and pharma pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Dover
The method answers these before Dover erection dates are fixed:
- Trailer slots and the port traffic. A freight queue on the A20 or A2 holds up everything behind it, steel trailers included. Trailers are booked for quieter hours, loaded in erection order, with a fallback slot agreed where the programme allows.
- Part-built frames held steady. At each break the steel already erected stays stable without the crane, held by guys or temporary braces until the permanent bracing is in.
- Gusts at the harbour and on the cliff top. Plots near the harbour and on the cliff top take the wind straight off the sea. Large panels and light members get a lower wind limit than the crane itself, checked before each lift.
- Ground that changes along the front. The chalk under the town is firm, but the strip by the sea is largely made ground, so bearing is checked wherever the crane stands and the mats chosen to suit.
- Crane positions fixed before fabrication. Our appointed person settles each crane position and what it reaches while the steel is still being detailed, and the fabricator plans the trailer loads from that.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Whitfield workshops and town schools stay in use while their new steel goes up. Before any new member is tied in, the existing frame is surveyed and its connections checked. A mezzanine inside a school hall or a Whitfield workshop has a roof over it, so its members are carried in and stood up inside.
Taking a frame down for a new layout starts with the members that can come out without disturbing the rest, and props go in wherever one release would leave steel hanging free. Pieces heading back up are match-marked, and a frame bound for another site is loaded in the order it will be re-erected.

Why Synergy
Why Dover firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Security and inductions sorted early. Site passes, inductions and vehicle checks are arranged before the first trailer is booked.
- Frames for firms from Whitfield to Sandwich. Manufacturers and trade businesses there have new units put up, bays added and mezzanines fitted.
- Crane and gang under one plan. Our appointed person sets the crane positions, and our own erectors work to them, slinging and bolting each member.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
These services of ours can join a Dover steel job:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Everything we price from comes in one email: the drawings, the steel schedule, the address and your programme.
-
We then look at the site itself, noting crane standings, ground, the approach for trailers, space to set steel down and anything overhead.
-
From that visit our appointed person prepares the lift plan. A method statement and risk assessment go with it, saying how the frame stays stable while part-built.
-
Loading is agreed with your fabricator, piece by piece, to match the erection sequence.
-
On site the gang lifts, braces, lines and levels the steel before the next trade takes the frame.
FAQs
Common questions
We need a canopy over a loading bay that stays in use. Can the yard keep running?
Mostly, yes. The lifts over the bay are grouped into the hours you can close it, and the rest of the steel goes up with vehicles still using the yard behind an exclusion zone.
Our frame is going up beside a railway line. How is that planned?
Around the rules the railway sets for work next to the line. Lifts that could reach the track are grouped into the agreed possession, and the crane position is chosen so the jib stays clear of the line outside it.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
