Overview
Steel erection in Cumbria and across the county
Steel goes up all over Cumbria: new units and extensions on the Carlisle estates, mezzanines and platforms in engineering units around Workington and Maryport, new bays for food and drink plants at Carlisle and Dalston, and hotel and visitor building schemes in the National Park. There, the lanes and bridges decide which crane can reach a site, so access is looked at first.
The frames run from small portal sheds and canopies to light gauge walling and plant support steel, and we lift and erect larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames as well. Work comes from Carlisle, Penrith and Kendal, the coast from Workington to Whitehaven, and Barrow-in-Furness. Straightforward portal frames are priced from drawings and photographs, frequently on the day they reach us.
What steel erection covers
We stand the frame your fabricator supplies, bolt it up, line and level it, and fit bracing and secondary members. LFS and SFS framing and dismantling for reconfiguration or reuse sit in the same service. The order can include cladding, roofing or machinery installation.
What we do
What we erect in Cumbria
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Extensions to food and drink factories | Carlisle and Dalston | The tie-in to the existing frame, with production next door |
| Portal frame units | Kingmoor Park and the estates around Carlisle | Where the crane stands for each grid line |
| Frames for hotel and visitor buildings | Towns and villages in the National Park | The size of each delivered piece |
| Mezzanines and internal platforms | Engineering and trade units around Workington and Maryport | How the steel gets into the building, and what the floor carries |
| Equipment frames and walkways | Treatment works, reservoirs and hydro schemes | Live pumps and pipework around the new members |
| Frames taken apart for re-erection | Units being reorganised or vacated in Kendal and Penrith | Keeping what remains braced as members come out |
How the service works is set out on our steel erection and dismantling page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Cumbria
Cumbrian steel jobs come from the Carlisle plain, the west and Furness coasts and the fells between.
Mezzanines in working units
Mezzanine floors and internal platforms go into warehouses, workshops and trade units from Workington to Penrith while the rest of the unit keeps working. See our industrial sector page.
Hotel and visitor schemes in the National Park
Frames, extensions and rooftop plant steel go up for hotels and visitor buildings from Keswick down to Bowness, timed around the season.
Food and drink plants at Carlisle and Dalston
Extensions, mezzanines and platform steel go in between production runs, with the steel route kept clear of the hygiene zones. See our food and beverages page.
Kingmoor Park, Lillyhall and Mintsfeet
Portal frame units go up on empty plots, and extensions and canopies on older units, across the business parks at Carlisle, Workington and Kendal. See our construction sector page.
Water and hydro sites in the fells
Equipment frames, screen supports and access walkways go in at treatment works and on hydro schemes, inside the outage the operator gives. See our waste water treatment page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Cumbria
Across Cumbria, these points settle the method:
- Loads that fit the route. Steel comes in over the M6 or the A66, and down the A595 for the west coast. In the National Park, humpback bridges and lanes with passing places limit the trailer, so the fabricator knows the largest piece the route takes and loads in erection order.
- Weather on the fells and the coast. Plots on high ground or near the shore get gusts that sheltered valley sites never see, and large panels and light members are the first lifts to stop. The day’s sequence is checked against the forecast for the site itself.
- Bracing whenever work pauses. The part-frame left at each break stands by itself, with permanent bracing brought in early and temporary guys designed in where it follows later.
- Ground at each outrigger. Soft riverside land and hardstanding of unknown make-up are checked for bearing, and mats sized to the load at each crane position.
- Closures with the right council. Cumberland Council holds the roads in the north and west, and Westmorland and Furness Council those in the south and east. We apply to whichever it is and provide the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
New steel for a building that stays in use is tied into its existing frame once we have surveyed the columns and connections it bolts to, as when a Kendal workshop takes a new bay. A mezzanine under a low workshop roof, with the lane outside too narrow for a crane, is built from within the building.
Frames being reconfigured or reused come down to a written sequence. The release order keeps what remains stable, propped where taking a member out would leave part unsupported. Pieces heading for a new site, say from Workington to Carlisle, are match-marked so the frame goes back together as it was.

Why Synergy
Why Cumbrian firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Steel for Carlisle food plants. Platforms, extensions and support steel go into food and drink factories around Carlisle while they keep producing.
- Work in every part of the county. Our gangs erect steel from Longtown down to Ulverston and across to Appleby.
- Planned and erected by one team. Our appointed person’s lift plan goes to the operatives who sling and bolt each member, so crane positions and erection order match.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Cumbrian steel job can draw on these as well:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Share your GA drawings, the steel schedule, the site postcode and the dates you are working to.
-
A site visit covers crane standings, ground conditions, the way in for wagons, space to set steel down and any cables overhead.
-
Our appointed person then writes the lift plan. The method statement and risk assessment go with it and show what holds the frame up at each stage.
-
We fix the loading order with your fabricator, piece by piece, to match the erection sequence.
-
Columns, rafters and bracing go up, the frame is lined and levelled, and the next trade takes the site.
FAQs
Common questions
The lane to our Lakeland hotel is narrow. Can the steel be detailed in shorter lengths?
Yes, if your fabricator knows early. Once we have checked the bridges, the lane width and the space at the site, we give the fabricator the longest piece the route takes and choose a crane that can reach and set up.
Can production carry on while a new bay goes onto our Carlisle food factory?
Yes. Lifts are timed to your production breaks, and the steel route stays clear of the hygiene areas. We measure the existing columns early, so your engineer has the tie-in detail settled before anything is fabricated.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
