Overview
Steel erection in Cardiff and across south Wales
A lot of Cardiff’s steel goes into public, hospital and university buildings, as plant platforms, link steel and small extensions added while the doors stay open. On the business parks at Cardiff Gate, Wentloog, Capital Business Park and West Point it is new units, loading canopies and mezzanines, and electronics and precision manufacturers add support steel inside controlled production halls.
We erect the steel your fabricator supplies, including larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames, and plan the lifting as part of the job. Our gangs cover the city, Cardiff Bay and out to Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly, Pontypridd and Bridgend. A plain shed on Wentloog or at Cardiff Gate can often be priced on the day your drawings and site photographs come in.
What steel erection covers
The job takes in erecting and bolting up the frame, lining, levelling and bracing it, and fixing the secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. Frames can also be dismantled for reconfiguration or reuse. On request, cladding, roofing and machinery installation are packaged with the steel.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Cardiff
Five kinds of Cardiff site account for the steel we put up.
Public buildings that stay open
Plant decks, access walkways and link steel go onto hospital, university and civic buildings, with each lift timed around the people using them. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Units on the business parks
Portal frames, loading canopies and mezzanines go up for manufacturing, distribution and trade firms at West Point, Cardiff Gate and on the Wentloog estates. See our industrial sector page.
Electronics and precision manufacturing
Equipment frames and service walkways go into electronics and precision production halls, with the route in and the site’s cleanliness rules agreed before any steel arrives. See our plastics and metals page.
The Bay and the dock estate
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill go up on redevelopment plots around Cardiff Bay, while stores and shelters on the working dock estate are timed around the ships in port. See our maritime sector page.
Substations and valley rail sites
Equipment frames and access platforms are placed at substations and on rail sites up the valleys, in the outage or possession the network owner grants. See our power and renewables and rail pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Cardiff
We work through these with you before any Cardiff steel is loaded:
- Council permits and event days. A crane standing in the road or a trailer across a footway needs a permit from Cardiff Council, and we supply the traffic management and road closure. In the centre, event days close streets and fill others, so the date is checked before the crane is booked.
- Reach decided at drawing stage. Our appointed person fixes each crane position before your fabricator orders material, so loads are made up to match what the crane reaches from each spot.
- Trailers timed to the crane. Steel arrives in the order it goes up. On a boxed-in central plot with no space to put steel down, we call each wagon in as the crane comes free.
- Reclaimed ground by the Bay. Much of the land around the Bay and the docks was reclaimed, and cellars run under the pavements of the older central streets, so each crane standing has its outrigger loads checked and spread on mats.
- Bracing ahead of each stop. Each pause leaves a frame that is safe as it stands, so any bay still waiting for its permanent bracing gets temporary braces or guys.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
In an occupied Cardiff building, the existing frame is surveyed before any tie-in is designed, so each new connection suits what is actually there. A hospital plant room or a production hall with a low door is usually beyond any crane, so the members are sized with the fabricator to fit the route in and are raised inside.
For dismantling, the sequence is worked out around the steel left standing, so each member is released only when the rest can carry itself. Each member due to be re-used is match-marked and logged before it is unbolted.

Why Cardiff firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Buildings in use. Lifting beside the people using hospitals, offices and civic buildings is everyday work for our crews.
- Planners and erectors in one team. The gang putting your steel up works to the lift plan our appointed person wrote for that frame, with no hand-over between the two.
- Estate frames and clean-area steel. We erect portal frames on the business parks and support steel inside controlled production halls.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection

Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Drawings, the steel schedule, the site address and your programme are what we need first.
-
On a site visit we look at crane standings and the ground beneath them, delivery access, lay-down room and overhead lines.
-
With the lift plan written by our appointed person, the method statement and risk assessment set out temporary stability for each stage.
-
We and your fabricator fix the sequence the loads are dispatched in.
-
We erect and brace the steel, then line and level it before handing over to whoever follows us on site.
FAQs
Common questions
Our support steel goes into a controlled production area. How is it kept clean?
Your site sets the cleanliness rules, and we agree with your team how the steel is prepared and which route it takes in before it arrives. Those rules go into the method statement, and the gang works to them.
We are adding a floor inside a public building that stays open. How are visitors kept clear?
Each lift has an exclusion zone, and deliveries come in outside opening hours where the building allows. The route in for the steel is agreed with the building’s managers, and marshals keep it clear while members are moving.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
