Overview
Steel erection in Exeter and across Devon
Exeter steel work comes mainly from the estates near the M5. A trade firm at Marsh Barton or Sowton wants a storage floor or an extra bay, while the plots at Skypark and Greendale take new warehouses and business units. Food producers across Devon also put platforms into halls that keep running.
Storage floors and added bays make up most of it, and Skypark is where the warehouse frames go up, with room on the open plot to move the crane along the building. Our gangs work in the city from Pinhoe down to Topsham and out to Crediton, Cullompton, Tiverton, Exmouth and Honiton. A single unit on a trade estate can normally be priced from drawings and a few photographs before the end of the working day.
What steel erection covers
Your fabricator makes the steel and our gang puts it up: columns and rafters bolted, lined and levelled, with the bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. We dismantle old steel too.
What we do
What we erect in Exeter
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Business park buildings and warehouses | Plots at Skypark, Greendale and off junction 29 | How many crane set-ups it takes to reach the far gable |
| Mezzanine floors | Trade counters and workshops on Marsh Barton | The route in through the shutter and the slab under each baseplate |
| Extensions and added bays | Existing units at Sowton and Pinhoe | What the survey finds at the columns the new steel bolts to |
| Process platforms and walkways | Food and drink halls across Devon | Hygiene zones and the length of the shutdown |
| Canopies and light gauge framing | Commercial and residential schemes in the city | Bundle sizes and the floor each one lands on |
| Equipment frames and access steel | Substations, water, waste and telecoms sites | The outage window the operator sets |
Our steel erection and dismantling page covers the service in more depth.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Exeter
Some Exeter frames go up on open plots east of the motorway, and others go into buildings that are already trading.
New sheds on the parks east of the M5
Warehouses, business units and racking steel go up at Skypark and Greendale, where open plots let a crane travel along the building line. See our construction sector page.
Mezzanines inside Marsh Barton units
Storage floors and office decks are built inside trade and workshop units there while the counter at the front keeps serving. See our industrial sector page.
Extensions by junction 30
Extra bays and lean-tos are added to units at Sowton and the estates beside it, bolted to frames that went up years before.
Process floors for Devon food producers
Platforms, walkways and support steel for new lines go into food and drink halls across the county, erected in a shutdown or beside a line that stays in production. See our food and beverages page.
Frames at utility and telecoms sites
Equipment frames and access steel are erected at substations, water and waste treatment works and mast sites, inside the outage windows each operator fixes. See our waste water treatment and telecoms pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Exeter
Before an Exeter start date is fixed, we look at:
- Estate roads shared with trade counters. Marsh Barton yards serve customers all day, so steel arrives packed in erection order and lifts straight off the trailer.
- The Exe valley floor. Marsh Barton sits low beside the Exe, and some plots near the river are on made ground, so mats are sized to the bearing found under each outrigger.
- Devon County Council for the road. Where the crane or a trailer needs road space, Devon County Council grants it and our traffic management and road closure team sets it out on the day.
- Drawings checked against the crane. Our appointed person writes the lift plan while the steel is still being detailed, and the fabricator loads each trailer to match what the crane places from each position.
- Braces left in overnight. Whenever the gang stops, the part-built frame has to stand on its own, so temporary braces or guys stay in until the permanent bracing catches up.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
An extra bay on a Sowton unit goes up against a building where the business carries on as normal, so the steel is planned around its yard and working day. Where new members tie into an existing frame, that frame and its connections are surveyed first. Inside a Marsh Barton trade unit, a storage floor is built up from the shop floor, since the roof stays on and no crane can reach it.
Steel also comes out of units being cleared for a new tenant. The order of removal is worked out around the members that remain, so the structure is stable as each piece is released, and anything going back up is match-marked before its bolts come out.

Why Synergy
Why Exeter firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Units and mezzanines for the estates. Firms on Marsh Barton, Sowton and the business parks east of the motorway come to us for new frames, extra bays and storage floors.
- Platform steel for food producers. Devon food and drink firms get process platforms and walkways erected inside the shutdown they give us.
- Lift planning inside the erection team. The appointed person who fixes the crane positions works alongside the erectors, and whoever rigs a member stays with it until it is bolted up.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
An Exeter steel job can bring in these services too:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Our planners need the drawings by email, with the steel schedule, the site address and your programme.
-
We walk the plot to fix crane positions and check the ground, delivery access, lay-down and overhead lines.
-
Our appointed person writes the lift plan, with a method statement and risk assessment showing how the frame stays stable at each stage.
-
With your fabricator we agree which members travel on each load and in what order.
-
Our erectors bolt the frame together, brace it, line and level it, and clear the way for the cladders or the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
We want a mezzanine in our Marsh Barton unit. Does the floor slab need checking?
Yes. Each column puts a point load on the slab, so your engineer confirms the slab will carry it or designs pads under the baseplates. We check the route in and the clear height inside at the same visit.
Our Skypark unit has its bases in but no slab yet. Can the frame go up?
Yes. Portal frames are normally erected on the foundations and holding-down bolts before the slab is cast. The crane and trailers need a compacted sub-base, and bolt positions are checked against the drawings before the first column is stood.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
