Access and planning for dismantling in Dumfries
Before any cutting starts in Dumfries, these are agreed:
- What the plant held. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification are the operator’s work, or a specialist it brings in, and a certificate may cover one shift, so cutting hours are booked to them.
- Height, access and the rescue plan. Cutting positions sit on shells, roofs and steelwork, so access equipment, anchor points, how each piece is held as it is freed and the rescue arrangement go in the method statement.

Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Where the plant stands again somewhere, the rebuild shapes the method. Marks, photographs and connection details are taken while it stands, connections are broken at bolted joints instead of cut wherever one comes free, and pieces are crated for the road and store. Equipment sold on as a working machine gets the same handling.
At the end of a plant’s life the value sits in sorting. Carbon steel and stainless go to separate stacks, cable and non-ferrous to containers of their own, and material is cut to lengths that weigh cleanly. Most jobs hold some of each. Common questions
A redundant silo is coming out of a Galloway mill yard. Where does it start?
With a survey of what the silo is fixed to and what it carries, since the shell stiffens the ducting and walkways bolted to it. Ring sizes, temporary support and the crane position follow from that.
Can a creamery hall be stripped inside a production break?
Yes. We agree the hygiene boundary, the hot work position, who issues each vessel certificate and the hours we have the area. Floor drains are plated and heavier sections go in the quietest hours.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
