Replacing Glulam Trusses with Steel at Haggerston Castle with a 250te Crane

Old glulam trusses cut out and replaced with steel trusses at Haggerston Castle over six weeks, with a 250te crane working next to a listed building.

Project

Gable end trusses out and steel in beside a listed building

At Haggerston Castle we propped and cut out the old glulam trusses on both gable ends and replaced them with new steel trusses, then lifted steel channels onto the remaining glulam trusses so a new roof sheet could be fitted.

The work ran over six weeks next to a listed building, with the crane jib coming within metres of vulnerable structures, so every lift was planned precisely. We coordinated the contract lifts, the dismantling, the steel erection and the temporary propping ourselves.

The client had one contractor for the propping, dismantling, steel erection and crane work, which made coordinating the job around a listed building simpler.

Press Play the lift to watch the temporary props go in, the old glulam trusses come out, the new steel trusses go in at both ends and the steel channels go onto the roof.
