Project
Overhead cranes lifted in through the roof
We installed two new overhead cranes in a 12.5m-high warehouse for a steel stockist near Thirsk, on an insured contract lift. Each overhead crane unit weighed 24te, or 25.5te with the hook block and tackle.
The units were built up by others on the warehouse floor beneath an opening in the roof, 12m in from the building edge. Our crane set up outside, side-on to the building with its outriggers 1.5m from the wall, and reached over the roof and down through the opening at 18m radius, lifting each unit up and onto its tracks. Once the first was in place it was moved along the tracks so the second could be installed the same way.
Both overhead cranes were installed in a single day. The key was the crane position: close enough to reach through the roof opening, on ground that could take the outrigger loads.

Crane
A Tadano ATF 220G-5 with 71te of counterweight and 38.3m of main boom, set up on a 9.045m by 8.3m outrigger base with its outriggers 1.5m from the building. At 18m radius it had a capacity of 34.1te against a gross load of 25.5te: the 24te unit plus a 0.85te hook block and 0.65te of tackle.
Working Blind
The crane lifted over the 12.5m-high roof, so the operator could not see the load. A second slinger/banksman inside the building guided the hook down through the roof opening and talked the operator and lift supervisor through each lift by two-way radio.
Ground and Matting
The maximum outrigger load was 117.4te, spread on 6m² (3m by 2m) mats for a ground bearing pressure of 19.6t/m².
Team
Our appointed person planned the lift and prepared the method statement, risk assessment and lift plan. On site we provided a crane operator, a lift supervisor, a slinger/signaller and a rigger.
The Tadano ATF 220G-5 is a 220 tonne, five axle all-terrain crane with a 68m main boom, supplied with an operator for crane hire or as part of a contract lift.
