Access and planning for lifts in Exeter

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Exeter jobs:

• Getting there. The M5 runs past the east of the city and ends at junction 31 to the south west, and junctions 29, 30 and 31 serve most of the industrial areas, with the A30, A38 and A377 taking traffic out into Devon. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
• Live campus sites. Hospital and university work means working next to wards, entrances, plant rooms and pedestrian routes, so the standing position, the exclusion zone and the timing get agreed with the estates team before anything is booked.
• The old city centre. Streets inside the historic core are narrow and partly pedestrian, with limited standing room, so central lifts usually mean a compact machine early in the morning or on a Sunday.
• Ground and the river. Marsh Barton and the land along the Exe are low-lying with made ground in places. We confirm ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Devon County Council as part of the job.

Common questions

Can you lift on a hospital site while it is open?

Yes, and that is how most of this work happens. The standing position, the exclusion zone, the route for the load and the timing get agreed with the estates team in advance, and out-of-hours working is often the easier option.

Can you get a crane into a Marsh Barton unit?

Usually, yes, though the yards vary. City cranes and pick and carry machines handle the tighter units and where a yard is too small we look at reaching in from the estate road. Send us photos of the approach and the door opening.

Do you cover the rest of Devon?

Yes. Tiverton, Crediton, Honiton, Exmouth, Newton Abbot and the wider EX area are all regular working ground, and we cover Cornwall and Somerset too.
