Access and planning for a machine move in Blackpool

Points we check on most Blackpool jobs:

Getting loads in and out. Loads come in on the M55 from the M6 at Preston, leaving at junction 4 for the town and Progress Way or junction 3 for Fleetwood. Low bridges and weight limits are checked before we quote.
Wind and the tramway. A crane on the seafront has to stay inside its wind limits, and the tramway’s overhead lines need clearances, and sometimes an isolation, agreed ahead of the lift.
Floors and ground. Sand and made ground near the front, and older suspended floors in hotels and works, are checked before we fix a crane position or skate route.
When the machine can stop. Factories give us a weekend or a shutdown week, and seafront businesses want the work done out of season. We fix the dates with you at the start.

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. From Blackpool, heavy loads leave on the M55 to join the M6 at Preston, with the A585 serving Fleetwood and the A584 running along the coast through Lytham.

Common questions

Can you move plant out of a hotel or venue while it stays open?

Yes. We agree the route and the hours with your manager first and keep guests clear with barriers and a marshal. Roof plant comes off by crane from the street, and basement plant is skated out or taken out in sections.

What happens if the wind is too strong on the day?

The crane’s wind limits and the shape of the load set the cut-off. A fallback date is agreed when the job is booked, and work that needs no crane, such as disconnection and skating the machine to the door, can still go ahead.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is normally ours, and we set the machine in position accurately enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your engineers or the machine manufacturer, with who covers what agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?

Yes. A breakdown is prioritised, since your production has stopped. Ring us with the machine details and we will give you a firm attendance time on the call.
