Access and planning for lifts in Blackpool

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Blackpool jobs:

• Wind first. Seafront and promenade lifts are the ones most often stopped by weather. We plan around the crane’s wind limits and the shape of the load, and agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns.
• Getting there. The M55 runs in from the M6 at Preston, with junction 3 for Fleetwood and junction 4 for the town and the estates. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
• The promenade and the tramway. The tramway runs the length of the seafront with overhead lines above it, so lifts near the prom need clearances, and sometimes an isolation, agreed in advance.
• Crowds and season. Working over or beside public areas means exclusion zones, marshalling and, in most cases, doing the job out of season or overnight.
• Ground and road closures. Sand, made ground and buried services along the seafront all need checking, so we confirm ground bearing and use crane mats where needed. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Blackpool Council as part of the job.

Common questions

What happens if the wind stops a seafront lift?

We plan for it rather than hope. Wind limits come from the crane’s chart and the shape of the load, and on exposed sites we agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns, so the decision is made before the crane is on hire.

Can you work over a public area?

Yes, with exclusion zones, marshalling and, where needed, a road or pavement closure. In practice most of this work is done out of season or overnight, which makes it safer and quicker.

Can you lift near the tramway?

Yes, with the clearances agreed beforehand. The overhead lines set a minimum distance for the boom and the load, and some positions need an isolation arranging, which takes lead time.
