Overview

Steel erection in Swansea and across south west Wales

Swansea’s steel work leans towards industry. Metals, engineering and process firms across the county need platforms, pipe bridges and support frames put in during shutdowns, while new units, extensions and mezzanine floors go up on the Enterprise Park and around Llansamlet and Morriston. Down on the waterfront, redevelopment around SA1 and the docks brings canopies, small frames and infill framing.

Your fabricator makes the steel; we plan the lifts and erect it, from a single canopy to larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames. We cover Swansea, Morriston, Fforestfach and Gorseinon, with Neath, Llanelli, Ammanford and Carmarthen further out. A simple portal frame is quoted from drawings and photographs, often before the end of the working day.

What steel erection covers

Erecting the frame is the core: bolting up, lining and levelling, then bracing and secondary steel, with LFS and SFS framing where the design uses it. We dismantle existing frames for reconfiguration or reuse too. Where a shutdown also brings new plant, we can set the machines on the new steel in the same window.

What we do

What we erect in Swansea

Structure Where it goes up What sets the method
Support steel for process equipment Metals supply-chain and process units The shutdown dates and the live plant alongside
Walkways and pipe bridges Utilities and chemical sites across the county Permits to work and the services the steel spans
New units and extensions The Enterprise Park, Llansamlet and Morriston Holding-down bolts checked against the drawings before the first column
Mezzanines and machine platforms Precision engineering halls around the city How close the new columns sit to machine foundations
Canopies and infill framing Waterfront schemes at SA1 How the framing ties into the concrete core
Frames taken down for reuse Industrial buildings being cleared or reconfigured Which bays stay up while others come apart

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Swansea

In and around Swansea, the steel goes up on sites like these.

    Enterprise Park and Llansamlet units

New workshops, trade units and extensions go up for manufacturing, engineering and trade firms on the Enterprise Park and at Llansamlet and Plasmarl. See our industrial sector page.

    SA1 and the waterfront

Canopies, light gauge infill and small frames are erected on redevelopment plots beside the docks, with the working dock alongside. See our construction sector page.

    Engineering and metals workshops

Access platforms, crane rail supports and equipment frames go into fabrication, machining and metal finishing shops around Swansea and Neath, fitted to a maintenance shutdown and built around the plant that stays in service. See our plastics and metals page.

    Precision machining halls

Mezzanines and machine platforms are added in halls where precision parts are made, with each new column placed clear of the foundations under the machine tools. See our aerospace sector page.

    Chemical and utility sites

Pipe bridges, walkways and substation frames are erected on process and utility sites, timed to the planned outages. See our chemicals and power and renewables pages.

    Teaching and health buildings

Plant platforms and link steel go onto university and health service buildings around the city while they stay open, with lifts booked outside their busiest hours. See our education and healthcare and pharma pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Swansea

On a Swansea job we pin these down at quote stage:

    • Temporary stability at each pause. Whenever the gang stops, the steel already up has to hold itself, so temporary braces or guys go into any bay the permanent bracing has not reached.
    • Wind across the bay. Plots at SA1 and the docks take the wind straight off Swansea Bay, so every piece gets a wind limit in the lift plan and light members are sequenced to suit.
    • Reclaimed dock land. Ground around the docks and SA1 is made ground, so outrigger loads are worked out for each crane position and spread on mats.
    • Trailers packed to the sequence. Your fabricator packs each trailer in erection order, and on a busy works yard with little room to set steel down, pieces go straight from trailer to frame.
    • Road space from the right council. Closures in the city go through Swansea Council, with Neath Port Talbot Council to the east and Carmarthenshire County Council to the west, and we set up the traffic management and road closure.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

In Swansea, new steel mostly goes into buildings still in production. Each new connection is designed around a survey of the existing frame. Indoors and out of a crane’s reach, members come in through the widest door the building has and go up on jacks and gantries, or by electric pick and carry crane, which keeps the air clean in a machine hall at Llansamlet.

We also take steel down. The dismantling order protects whatever stays standing, releasing each member only once the rest is secure, and members that will be re-erected get their match-marks first.

    Why Synergy

Why Swansea firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Shutdown work on industrial sites. Our gangs work under permits and exclusion zones and plan the erection into the shutdown window.
    • Planned and erected by the same people. Our appointed person’s lift plan goes straight to the gang that puts the steel up, and they build the frame to it.
    • Steel for estates and engineering halls. We erect workshops on the Swansea estates and add mezzanines inside machine halls that keep running.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. It begins when your drawings, steel schedule, site address and programme reach us.

    2. Our site check covers crane standings, bearing ground, access for deliveries, lay-down space and overhead lines.

    3. Temporary stability runs through the paperwork: the appointed person’s lift plan first, then the method statement and risk assessment built on it.

    4. Delivery order is fixed with your fabricator, load by load.

    5. Columns, rafters and bracing go up, the frame is lined and levelled, and the next trade takes it on.

    FAQs

    Common questions

As soon as the shutdown dates are fixed. The lift plan, permits and the delivery order are settled beforehand, so the gang starts erecting on the first day of the window.

It can stop lifts of large panels and light members on a gusty day. We check the forecast before each shift and sequence the work so those pieces can wait for a calmer spell while other steel goes up.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
