Overview

Steel erection in Sunderland and across Wearside

Manufacturers in the supply chain on the Washington estates extend production halls and add platform steel, while businesses at Doxford and on the Pallion estate need new units framed. In the centre, regeneration along the Wear brings frames, canopies and infill walling on cramped plots squeezed between streets, Metro lines and the river.

Our gangs put up portal frames, mezzanines and canopies. On the Washington estates a new production hall can have an office floor built inside it, and we lift those frames too. Darlington, the closest of our depots, lies south of the city, off the A1(M), and we work across Southwick, Monkwearmouth, Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole, Seaham and Peterlee. Drawings and photographs of a new unit at Doxford bring a quote back the same working day.

What steel erection covers

Your fabricator makes the steel. Our gang erects it, bolts it up, lines and levels the frame, and fits the bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. Old frames can be taken down as well. If the building also needs sheeting, a roof or machinery installed, that can go in the same package.

What we do

What we erect in Sunderland

Structure Where it goes up What sets the method
Platform and plant support steel Manufacturing units on the Washington estates Working clear of live lines and robot cells
Extensions and extra bays Engineering and distribution buildings at Doxford and Pallion A survey of the existing columns and connections
Canopies and light gauge walling Regeneration plots in the city centre and along the Wear Which elevation the envelope trades need first
Portal frame units New plots on the A19 business parks How many bays each crane position can reach
Mezzanine decks Workshops and trade units that stay open Slab strength at each base plate, and the door width
Steel taken down and match-marked Riverside workshops being reconfigured The order members are released so the rest stands

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Sunderland

On Wearside the steel goes up in five kinds of place.

Supplier halls at Pattinson and Crowther

Plant support steel, walkways and new bays go up for manufacturers in the wider supply chain on the Pattinson and Crowther estates, fitted into the shutdown each plant sets. See our automotive sector page.

    Units at Doxford and Pallion

Portal frames and extensions are erected for manufacturers, engineers and distribution firms on the estates off the A19 and in Pallion. See our industrial sector page.

Frames for the centre’s riverside schemes

Commercial frames, canopies and LFS infill walling go up as the city centre and the banks of the Wear are redeveloped. See our construction sector page.

    Fabrication halls on the Wear

Hall extensions and platform steel are erected for engineering, offshore and energy firms working along the river. See our maritime and power and renewables sector pages.

    Hospitals and schools kept open

Plant decks, link steel and small extensions are added to hospital, university and school buildings while they stay open, or in the holidays. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Sunderland

Wearside frames are planned around these:

    • Wind off the North Sea. An LFS panel or a long, light member catches a sea wind at speeds the crane could still work in, so on riverside and coastal plots gusts are measured at height before those lifts.
    • Old dock and colliery ground. Where the docks and shipyards stood beside the Wear the land is mostly filled, and old coal workings lie beneath parts of the city and its outskirts. Mats under the outriggers are sized for each crane position.
    • A lift plan ahead of the steel order. Our appointed person works out the crane positions from the general arrangement drawings, and the fabricator then builds its loads around them.
    • The Metro and the council. The Metro’s overhead wires need a clearance distance, sometimes an isolation, booked well ahead. Road space in the city comes through Sunderland City Council, and at Seaham and Peterlee through Durham County Council; we apply and provide the traffic management and road closure.
    • Bays left open at shift end. Permanent bracing follows the erection as closely as the sequence allows, and temporary braces or guys hold any bay left open at the end of a shift.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

New steel for a building that keeps working, such as a supplier’s hall on the Crowther estate, is tied into its existing frame, and we survey that frame first. Where no crane can reach, the steel is walked in at a loading door and lifted inside by our electric pick and carry crane, working between the production lines.

Frames coming down for reconfiguration or reuse are dismantled in an order that keeps what remains standing, with each member held before its bolts are released. Anything returning to service is match-marked, so a mezzanine leaving a Pallion workshop can be rebuilt piece for piece at its next address.

    Why Synergy

Why Sunderland firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Regular work on Wearside. Our gangs erect steel on the estates at Doxford, Pallion and Washington and in workshops along the river.
    • Steel planned into shutdowns. On a production site the erection sequence is worked back from the date the line restarts.
    • Rigging and erection by one gang. The operatives who sling each member also bolt it up, working to the crane positions our appointed person set.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. The drawings and steel schedule come to us first, along with the address and the week the frame is due.

    2. A site look follows, covering crane positions, the ground, the wagon route in, room for lay-down and cables overhead.

    3. Our appointed person writes the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment set out the temporary bracing for each stage.

    4. Your fabricator loads each wagon to the erection order we agree with them.

    5. Once the frame is up, braced, lined and levelled, the next trade takes it over.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Sheeting or hoarding closes off the new bay until it is weathertight, and the tie-in to the existing frame goes in during a shutdown or at a weekend. Crane positions and lift routes are agreed with your site team so they stay outside the working areas.

It matters most for large panels and light members. Columns and rafters go up in winds that would stop an LFS panel, so we sequence the panel work for calmer spells and keep the main frame moving.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
