Overview
Steel erection in Newcastle and across Tyneside
Contractors on the Quayside, in Grainger Town and across the city centre need infill framing, canopies and rooftop plant steel lifted in on busy streets with offices and flats alongside. South of the river, manufacturers on Team Valley and the estates around it add bays and mezzanines, and engineering firms either side of the Tyne extend their halls.
On Team Valley most of it is portal frames and mezzanines, and a new hall there can be many bays long. In the city centre it is more often infill framing a few floors high between existing buildings. The gangs cover Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, Wallsend and North Shields, out to Cramlington and Ponteland and north into Northumberland. For a single-bay shed, drawings and a few site photographs are enough for a quote on the day they reach us.
What steel erection covers
Our gang stands the frame your fabricator supplies, bolts it, lines and levels it, and adds bracing, secondary steel and light gauge LFS or SFS walling. Steel already standing can be taken down when a riverside hall is being cleared.
What we do
What we erect in Newcastle
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Light gauge infill walling | City-centre and Quayside schemes built around a concrete or steel frame | Loading-out platforms and the floor sequence |
| Rooftop plant decks | Offices, hospitals and university buildings taking new chillers | What the roof below will carry |
| Extra bays and lean-tos | Manufacturing units on Team Valley | Where the new rafters meet the old gable |
| Mezzanines for stock and picking | Distribution and trade units across Gateshead | Headroom under the haunches and the route through the doors |
| Hall extensions | Fabrication and engineering works on the Tyne | Which bays the works can give up while the steel goes in |
| Frames dismantled for reuse | Units being cleared or reorganised | Release order and match-marking |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Newcastle
Across Tyneside, frames and platform steel go up in these settings.
Infill and canopies from Haymarket to the Quayside
LFS walling, entrance canopies and rooftop plant steel go onto commercial and residential schemes across the centre after the main structure has gone up. See our construction sector page.
Bays and mezzanines on Team Valley
New bays, lean-tos and mezzanine floors are added for manufacturers and distribution firms on Team Valley and neighbouring Gateshead estates, with the units carrying on trading. See our industrial sector page.
Hall steel on the north and south banks
Extensions and access platforms are erected for fabrication, engineering and offshore firms beside the river, planned around work in the halls. See our maritime and power and renewables pages.
Chiller steel on hospital and university roofs
Support steel for chillers and air handling units, and walkways to reach them, go up on healthcare, university and college buildings that stay open, at times the estates teams set. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Lineside frames on the main line and the Metro
Equipment frames and access platforms go in beside the East Coast Main Line and on the Metro, erected in the hours a possession gives. See our rail sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Newcastle
These points decide how a Newcastle frame goes up:
- Temporary bracing designed in. The sequence leaves a stable part-frame whenever work stops. Where the permanent bracing follows later, temporary braces or guys are written into the method.
- Two councils either side of the Tyne. Road or pavement space on the north bank comes from Newcastle City Council and on the south bank from Gateshead Council. We make the application and set out the traffic management and road closure. Bus lanes and pedestrianised streets in the centre narrow the choice of crane position.
- Lifting from the trailer bed. A city plot with nowhere to set steel down takes each load in erection order in a booked slot, and every member goes straight from the wagon to the frame.
- Gusts on the upper floors. A large LFS panel or a long purlin swings in a gust that would not trouble a column, so panel lifts wait on the supervisor’s wind reading at height.
- Quays and cellars. Riverside land was often built up behind old quay walls, and cellars run under many city pavements, so each crane position is checked before mats and outrigger pads are sized.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Before new steel goes into a building still in use, we survey the frame it will tie into. Inside, out of a crane’s reach, a mezzanine for a Team Valley unit goes up while the business keeps packing orders around the gang.
Taking a frame down follows a sequence planned around the steel that stays, releasing each member once the rest can stand without it. Members going back up are match-marked before the bolts come out, and the marks follow the original erection drawing.

Services
More than steel erection
A Newcastle steel package can include:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Tell us where the site is and when the steel must be up, and attach the drawings.
-
On site we mark out crane positions and check the ground, the delivery route, lay-down space and any overhead lines.
-
The lift plan follows from our appointed person, with a method statement and risk assessment showing temporary stability at each break.
-
Your fabricator sends the loads out in the order we will erect them, agreed between us beforehand.
-
Steel then goes up bay by bay, and the frame is braced, lined and levelled before the following trade takes it on.
FAQs
Common questions
Our Quayside scheme needs LFS walling on every floor. How do the bundles get up there?
Bundles arrive in erection order on booked deliveries and go straight from the trailer to a loading platform on the right floor. Where the crane needs road space, the lift goes in an evening or on a Sunday.
Our Team Valley unit needs an extra bay. Can we keep trading from it?
Yes. The new bay goes up outside the existing gable and the opening into the building is made once the bay is sheeted, so the unit stays closed in until the tie-in. The crane stands clear of your yard traffic wherever the plot allows.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Let us have the drawings and site address, with the date the frame has to be finished. If the cladding and roof are to come from us as well, send that specification too. If there is more than one way onto the plot, photographs of each help us place the crane.
We also provide steel erection in Sunderland, Durham, Hartlepool and Teesside. See all the steel erection locations.
