Overview
Steel erection in Teesside and across the Tees Valley
Cargo and storage sheds go up on the estuary estates for firms handling goods by sea, and offices and public buildings in Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees need decks for new rooftop plant. Around Yarm and Ingleby Barwick the work is more often classroom extensions and canopies. Close to the river and the coast, the wind decides when large panels can be lifted.
Portal frames, canopies and plant decks make up most of the work here, all from your fabricator, and cargo sheds on the estuary estates bring the larger frames. Our Darlington depot is a short run west along the A66, and gangs work across Stockton-on-Tees, Yarm, Guisborough, Redcar, Saltburn and Stokesley. Drawings and site photographs are all we need to price a canopy or a plant deck, often on the day they reach us.
What steel erection covers
Our gangs erect the frame, bolt it, square it up, and add bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS framing. Taking existing steel down is part of the service too.
What we do
What we erect in Teesside
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Cargo and storage sheds | Port-side estates along the estuary | Where the first braced bay sits and the crane’s path down the building |
| Plant decks and rooftop platforms | Offices and public buildings in Middlesbrough and Stockton | What the existing roof steel can take |
| Classroom extensions and canopies | Schools and colleges across the four boroughs | Holiday dates and the route past rooms in use |
| Workshops and small portal frames | Guisborough, Stokesley and the villages towards the moors | One crane position covering the whole frame |
| LFS and SFS framing | Residential and mixed-use schemes in Stockton and Yarm | Wall order floor by floor, and where bundles land |
| Frames dismantled for another site | Units being cleared or reconfigured | The order members are released, and match-marks |
Our steel erection and dismantling page explains each part of the service.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Teesside
The work here splits across the four boroughs like this.
Canopies and teaching blocks for schools and colleges
Classroom extensions, covered walkways and canopies go up across Middlesbrough, Stockton and Redcar, timed to the school holidays or to weekends. See our education sector page.
Cargo sheds on the port estates
Portal frame sheds and storage buildings for cargo and port users go up on open land beside the estuary. See our maritime sector page.
Plant decks on Middlesbrough and Stockton roofs
Support steel and access platforms for new chillers and air handling units are erected on offices and civic buildings ahead of the plant arriving. See our HVAC page.
Workshops out towards Guisborough and the moors
Small portal frames and workshop buildings go up for engineering and trade firms in Guisborough, Stokesley, Great Ayton and the villages of east Cleveland. See our industrial sector page.
Town schemes in Stockton, Yarm and Ingleby Barwick
Frames, light gauge infill and canopies for residential, retail and mixed-use schemes go up on plots in and around the town centres. See our construction sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Teesside
On Teesside, these get settled before a date is booked:
- Wind along the estuary and the coast. Sheds by the river and buildings near the sea at Redcar and Saltburn catch the wind, and a sheeting rail or a large LFS panel becomes unsafe to lift well before a heavy rafter does. Each morning the supervisor compares the forecast with the wind reading on site before the lighter pieces go up.
- Stability whenever work stops. The erection sequence leaves each part-built frame able to stand, with temporary bracing or guys added wherever the permanent bracing comes later.
- Loads packed to the sequence. Each trailer carries members in the order they go up, so where a site has no lay-down the crane takes steel straight off the bed.
- Reclaimed land by the river. Plots beside the Tees sit on reclaimed and former industrial ground, so ground bearing is confirmed at each crane position and mats spread the outrigger loads.
- The lift plan ahead of the steel order. Crane positions and what each one can reach are fixed first, and the fabricator plans the loads from that.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
A Teesside school that stays open while it gains a link or a platform has its existing frame surveyed before any new steel joins it. A platform inside the school cannot be reached by a crane from outside, so its members come through a double door and are raised while classes carry on elsewhere in the building.
We also dismantle steel for reconfiguration or reuse. The order of release is worked out so the members still in place stay stable, and anything to be re-erected is match-marked so it goes back together the same way at the new site.

Why Synergy
Why Teesside firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Sheds on the estuary estates. Cargo and storage buildings go up on open land by the river for shipping and logistics firms.
- Decks ready before the chillers arrive. Plant support steel is erected on occupied offices and civic buildings ahead of the plant it carries.
- Lift planning and erection under one supervisor. The appointed person’s plan goes straight to the gang that rigs and bolts each member.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Other work we can add to a Teesside steel job:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Your drawings and steel schedule come first, with the site address and the dates in your programme.
-
A site visit follows, covering where a crane could stand, the ground, the way in for trailers, room to set steel down and any power lines.
-
The appointed person’s lift plan leads, and the method statement and risk assessment built on it give the temporary stability for each phase.
-
With your fabricator we settle which members travel on which trailer, in erection order.
-
We erect and brace bay by bay, line and level the whole frame, and hand it over to the cladders or the next trade on the programme.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new shed is on open land by the estuary. Will the wind hold up the erection?
It can hold up the lighter members and large panels, so the sequence puts the heavy frame members first and the supervisor holds the lighter lifts on a gusty day.
Our Stockton office needs a plant deck on the roof. Can staff stay in the building?
Yes. Your engineer confirms where the new steel bears on the existing roof, the crane stands on a street or car park agreed in advance, and the entrances below are closed off while anything is in the air.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Send the drawings, the steel schedule and the site postcode, and say which month the frame is due to go up. Let us know too whether the fabricator has started, as the lift plan can still shape how the loads are packed.
We also provide steel erection in Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington and Durham. See all the steel erection locations.
