Overview
Steel erection in Reading and across Berkshire
Much of the steel we erect around Reading holds up building services along the M4 corridor. Data centre operators need frames for standby power and cooling, office landlords in the town centre and on business parks such as Green Park need roof steel for replacement plant, and firms at Theale, Calcot and Winnersh add units and extensions. Housing and commercial schemes beside the Thames bring frames and light gauge walls on small plots.
Our gangs erect the plant decks and roof steel for those buildings, and we supply the cranes to lift whole frames as well, such as a data hall with its generator yard and a floor of offices alongside. We work across Reading and out to Wokingham, Bracknell, Newbury, Basingstoke, Maidenhead and Slough. Once drawings and photographs arrive, a new unit at Theale or Winnersh is priced the same working day.
What steel erection covers
We erect steel supplied by your fabricator, bolt it up, line and level it, and install bracing and secondary steel. Light gauge LFS and SFS framing comes within the same scope, as does taking out old plant steel when a roof is re-equipped. Landlords replacing plant often have us lift the new chillers onto the steel we have just set.

| Portal frame units and extensions | Estates at Theale, Calcot and Winnersh | Crane positions that reach both gables |
| Light gauge framing and canopies | Riverside and town-centre schemes | A single access point and deliveries called forward one by one |

| Mezzanines taken down and re-erected | Units being refitted for a new occupier | Keeping the rest stable, with each piece match-marked |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page explains the work stage by stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Reading
Steel enquiries around Reading mostly land on one of five kinds of site.
Units west of the town at Theale and Calcot
New portal frame units, extensions and mezzanine floors go up for engineering, technology and trade firms on the estates at Theale and Calcot and across at Winnersh. See our industrial sector page.
Data centre compounds along the M4
Generator decks, cooling plant frames and cable support steel go into live facilities, with every lift sequenced inside the window the operator sets. See our data centre infrastructure page.
Office roofs at Green Park and Thames Valley Park
Plant platforms, access walkways and screen steel go onto occupied office buildings when the chillers or air handling units on them are changed, overnight or at weekends. See our HVAC page.
Beside the railway
Equipment frames, walkways and access platforms are erected on railway land around the junction inside possessions agreed well ahead. See our rail sector page.
Riverside and town-centre schemes
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill go up on residential, student and commercial buildings along the Thames and in the centre, on plots with one way in. See our construction sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Reading
For each Reading frame, these five questions are answered before the first delivery:
- Made ground and buried services. Near the Thames and the Kennet the plots sit low, some on made ground, and business park yards often have drainage and ducting under them, so every outrigger position is checked and matted.
- Standing positions agreed before detailing. Our appointed person plans the crane positions while the steel is still being drawn, and the fabricator packs each load to match.
- Stable at each pause. Bracing follows the columns closely, and any part-frame left overnight is held by temporary bracing or guys.
- Delivery slots on a busy corridor. The M4, A33 and A329(M) are slow through the peaks and beyond, so steel arrives in booked slots in the order it goes up.
- Reading Borough Council or its neighbours. A crane or trailer taking part of a road needs a permit from Reading Borough Council, or from Wokingham Borough Council or West Berkshire Council outside the borough, and we make the application and put in the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
New steel for an occupied building is tied into its existing frame once we have surveyed the columns and connections it will bear on. In a Winnersh unit that keeps trading, a mezzanine is put together from inside a bay at a time, with the shop floor fenced off around the gang.
When steel is removed, the release order is set so that each member comes out without upsetting what stays standing. Anything going back up in the new layout is match-marked and listed against the drawings.

Why Synergy
Why Reading firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Roof steel out of hours. Plant platforms on let offices are lifted overnight or at weekends, while the floors below are empty.
- Steel sequenced to data centre windows. Frames for generators and cooling plant are planned back from the finish time the operator gives.
- The crew who lift it also fix it. Our appointed person plans the lifts, and the same operatives sling each member and bolt it in, working from one sequence.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Reading steel packages can take in these services as well:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
You send drawings, a steel schedule, the site address and the programme you are working to.
-
Our planner walks the site to see where a crane fits, how firm the ground is, how trailers get in, where steel can be laid down and what runs overhead.
-
Paperwork comes next. The appointed person prepares the lift plan, and the risk assessment and method statement set out what holds the frame steady at each stage.
-
We work out the load order with your fabricator, matched to the erection sequence.
-
The frame is stood, braced, lined and levelled, and the site passes to the following trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our data centre operator has given us a single weekend. How do you plan the plant steel around it?
We plan back from the finish time the operator sets, with every load arriving in lift order and the crane on site for the whole window. The quote says plainly whether the steel fits that weekend or needs splitting across more than one, so you can go back to the operator before dates are fixed.
Our unit at Winnersh has drainage under the service yard. Where does the crane stand?
We check the drainage and duct runs before choosing a position, then spread the outrigger loads on mats or move the crane clear of them. Send any drainage drawings with the steel drawings.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
