Overview
Steel erection in Hartlepool and across east Durham
Engineering and fabrication shops, offshore and marine yards around the docks, and firms on Oakesway, Sovereign Park and Wynyard need workshops, extensions and platform steel. The town centre and the marina bring schemes of their own. Near the docks, plots are boxed in by the railway and the water, so there is little room to lay steel down.
Most jobs are extensions, workshop frames, mezzanines and platforms from steel your fabricator supplies, and we can take on larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames too, such as a fabrication hall on a plot by the docks. Gangs come over from our Darlington depot and work across the Headland, Seaton Carew, Greatham, Billingham, Wynyard, Peterlee and Blackhall. A price for a lean-to or a single shed normally goes back the same working day, worked out from drawings and photographs.
What steel erection covers
Our erectors stand and bolt the frame, then line, level and brace it, adding secondary steel and light gauge LFS or SFS framing. Existing steel is taken down too, for a shop being laid out afresh or a frame moving to another yard. We can add cladding, roofing and machinery installation where the building needs it.
What we do
What we erect in Hartlepool
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Extensions and added bays | Engineering and fabrication shops | The existing frame’s condition and the crane beams it carries |
| Workshops and stores | Offshore and marine yards around the docks | Yard traffic around the crane, and where the doors go |
| Portal frame units | Oakesway, Sovereign Park and Wynyard | The number of crane set-ups along each elevation |
| Platforms and plant support steel | Waste and recycling sites | Moving vehicles and live equipment around each lift |
| Frames, canopies and light gauge framing | Town centre and marina schemes | The floor sequence the envelope trades follow |
| Steel dismantled for reuse | Buildings being cleared or altered | Stability of what remains, and match-marks |
Detail on every stage is on our steel erection and dismantling page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Hartlepool
Around Hartlepool, the frames we price go up in these places.
Bays for engineering and fabrication shops
New bays, crane beam steel and lean-tos go up on engineering buildings across the town’s estates, sequenced around the work on the shop floor. See our plastics and metals page.
Frames on waterfront and town-centre plots
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill for regeneration schemes go up around the marina and the town centre. See our construction sector page.
New units on the Oakesway and Wynyard estates
Portal frames for manufacturing, engineering and distribution units are put up on open plots where the crane can move freely between bays. See our industrial sector page.
Yard buildings for offshore and marine firms
Workshops, stores and canopies are erected in yards around the docks for offshore and marine engineering firms. See our maritime sector page.
Platforms at waste and recycling sites
Access platforms, conveyor support steel and small frames are put up where waste keeps arriving, with the lifts fitted around the vehicle movements. See our waste and recycling page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Hartlepool
Hartlepool frames are planned around the following:
- Tight plots and no lay-down. Where a plot backs onto the railway or the quay and there is nowhere to set steel down, each trailer is loaded in erection order and called forward only when the crane is ready for it.
- Wind off the North Sea. Exposed and quayside plots catch the weather, and cladding rails, purlins and large panels are held back when gusts pick up, well before a heavier member would be.
- Bracing ahead of every pause. Each break in erection leaves a part-frame that stands up by itself, braced permanently where the sequence allows and guyed or temporarily braced where it does not.
- A lift plan the fabricator can load from. Our appointed person fixes crane positions and reach first, and the fabricator then packs each trailer to match that plan.
- Road space from Hartlepool Borough Council. When the crane or a trailer needs part of a road or footway, we apply to the council and arrange the traffic management and road closure as part of the job.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
On an Oakesway unit that stays open while it grows, we survey the existing frame before any new member is bolted to it. Inside a fabrication shop, a new platform often sits below the building’s own crane rails, out of reach of any mobile crane, so the steel goes up from inside the shop.
Dismantling follows a release order that keeps the remaining frame standing as each member comes out. Anything that will go back up at another site is match-marked first, and the marks are recorded against the drawings.

Why Synergy
Why Hartlepool firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Workshops for the fabrication trade. Engineering and fabrication shops get added bays, crane beam steel and extensions from us.
- Buildings for the dockside yards. Workshops and stores go up for offshore and marine firms working around the docks.
- Planning and erecting by the same people. The appointed person’s lift plan is carried out by the gang that slings, lands and bolts each member.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Hartlepool steel work can bring in these services too:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Get in touch with the drawings, the steel schedule, the site’s address and your key dates.
-
A lift planner from our team comes out to judge crane standings, ground, the delivery route, lay-down and overhead lines.
-
Temporary stability for every stage of the frame is written into the lift plan, method statement and risk assessment.
-
Loads are agreed with the fabricator so each trailer reaches Hartlepool in the order its steel is needed.
-
Once standing, the frame is braced, lined, levelled and handed over for the next trade to start.
FAQs
Common questions
We are adding a bay to a workshop on the docks. How do the yard’s rules affect the erection?
Each yard has its own inductions, permit system and vehicle rules, and those go into the lift plan, with trailer arrivals booked around the ships and cargo using the quay. Send the yard’s requirements with the drawings so the programme allows for them.
Our steel is for a recycling building. Can it go up while the site keeps taking loads?
Yes. The crane position and lay-down are fenced off from the tipping areas and vehicle routes, and lifts are timed with the site manager around incoming deliveries. Sorting carries on in the rest of the building, and a lift over a working bay waits until that bay is clear.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Send the drawings with the plot’s address, whether site inductions apply and the dates your programme sets aside for the steel. A steel schedule helps if the fabricator has one.
We also provide steel erection in Middlesbrough, Teesside, Durham and Sunderland. See all the steel erection locations.
