Overview
Steel erection in Darlington and across south Durham
Engineering and distribution firms on the Faverdale, Lingfield Point and Yarm Road estates need new workshops, extra bays and storage floors, and the town’s rail businesses need platforms inside their sheds. Whatever your fabricator makes for the job, from a portal frame or a mezzanine to an extension or a canopy, our gangs erect it, and we can lift larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames as well, such as a new distribution shed at Faverdale.
Gangs set out from our Darlington depot on the Cleveland Industrial Estate and work across the town and out to Newton Aycliffe, Heighington, Hurworth, Barnard Castle, Northallerton and Richmond. A single workshop frame on one of the estates can usually be priced the same working day from drawings and photographs.
What steel erection covers
We stand the frame, bolt it up, set it true to line and level, and fit the bracing and secondary steel, along with LFS and SFS light gauge framing. When a rail shed or a workshop is rearranged, its old steel can be taken down and kept for use again. Cladding and roofing can follow on from the steel if you want one firm on site.
What we do
What we erect in Darlington
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|

| Extensions to engineering works | Engineering firms around the town | A survey of the old frame and its connection plates |
| Platforms and walkways | Rail maintenance and engineering sheds | Headroom under the trusses and the track below |
| Mezzanines and storage floors | Distribution and trade units that stay open | Door width and the slab under each column |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Darlington
Most of the town’s steel work sits in one of these groups.
Sheds and platforms for the railway
Access platforms, walkways and lifting beam steel go into rail maintenance and engineering buildings, fitted around the work on the tracks inside. See our rail sector page.
Warehouses and workshops at Faverdale and Lingfield Point
Portal frames for new warehouses and workshops go up once the slab and holding-down bolts are ready. See our industrial sector page.
New bays on engineering works
New bays, lean-tos and crane beam steel are added to engineering buildings while the machines inside keep cutting and welding. See our plastics and metals page.
Frames and canopies in the town centre
Small frames, canopies and infill framing go up on commercial and residential schemes, fitted between neighbouring buildings. See our construction sector page.
Rooftop frames for health and education buildings
Frames for new chillers and air handling units are put up on buildings that stay open, with school work fitted into the holidays. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Darlington
Before a Darlington frame gets a start date, we work through these:
- Made ground by the Skerne. Plots on old industrial land, and the low ground beside the river, can be filled or soft. Bearing is confirmed at each outrigger position before the mats are sized.
- Crane positions set before the order. Our appointed person writes the lift plan while the steel is still on the drawings, so the fabricator knows which members the crane places from each position.
- Road space from Darlington Borough Council. In the centre, one-way streets and pedestrianised areas leave few places to stand a crane, so that spot is agreed early. Where the crane or a wagon needs a lane or footway, we apply to the council and provide the traffic management and road closure.
- Wagons in erection order. Each load is packed so the first members off are the first ones up, and on a yard with no lay-down the crane lifts straight from the trailer.
- A frame that stands at each stop. Permanent bracing follows close behind the erection, and any bay left open at the end of a shift is held with temporary braces or guys.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
When a Yarm Road engineering works gains a bay or a floor while it keeps running, we survey its existing frame and tie the new members in from what that shows. Mezzanines and platforms out of a crane’s reach are carried in through a door and raised on gantries and jacks, or placed with the electric pick and carry crane, so nothing runs on diesel inside.
Taking steel down is planned around what stays up. Members are released one at a time in a sequence that keeps the remaining frame stable, and any piece bound for another building is match-marked before the bolts come out.

Why Synergy
Why Darlington firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Frames for the town’s engineering firms. Firms making components and fabrications get new workshops, added bays and crane beam steel from us.
- Steel for rail buildings. Platforms and walkways go into maintenance sheds while trains are still serviced inside.
- Riggers and erectors in one crew. The people slinging each member are the ones bolting it up, following our appointed person’s lift plan, so the lifting and the erection sequence match.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Darlington steel job can draw on these as well:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
We need the drawings first, with the steel schedule, the plot address and when the frame is due.
-
We walk the plot and note where the crane can stand, the ground, the wagon route in, lay-down space and any cables overhead.
-
The lift plan follows from our appointed person, and the method statement and risk assessment set out how the part-built frame stays stable.
-
Your fabricator loads each wagon to the delivery order we agree together.
-
Columns and rafters go up and are braced, lined and levelled, and the frame passes to the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Can someone see our Faverdale plot before the steel is ordered?
Yes, and often the same day, as the depot is a few minutes away. Seeing the ground and the wagon route early lets the lift plan shape the delivery order.
Our building sits beside a railway line. Does that change how the steel goes up?
It changes the planning. The crane position is chosen so members are placed away from the line, and where the jib could come near it, clearances, and a possession if one is needed, are agreed with the rail infrastructure owner before the date.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
