Overview
Steel erection in Bristol and across the West of England
Bristol steel goes up in two settings. Out at Avonmouth, Severnside and Portbury there is flat ground for distribution sheds, process buildings and canopies over loading bays. In the centre and around the harbourside, frames, rooftop plant steel and infill framing go onto steep, tight plots with a street on every side.
Contractors, logistics firms and hospital and university estates bring us steel from their fabricator, anything from a canopy or mezzanine to a whole warehouse frame on the dock estate. We go out to Portishead, Keynsham, Bath, Thornbury and Weston-super-Mare. With drawings and a few photographs, a simple portal frame is often priced the day they land.
What steel erection covers
Our erectors stand the frame, bolt it up, plumb and level it, then fit the bracing and secondary steel. Light gauge framing in LFS or SFS is part of the same trade. Canopies and older bays come down too, when a dock yard is laid out again.
What we do
What we erect in Bristol
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution and warehouse frames | Open plots at Avonmouth and on Severnside | How many set-ups the crane needs along the building |
| Rooftop plant steel and infill framing | Commercial and student schemes near Temple Meads and the harbourside | Crane reach over the neighbouring buildings |
| Process and equipment support steel | Energy, process and utilities sites around Severnside | The outage window and the plant running beside the new members |
| Mezzanines and test floors | Engineering and aerospace supplier halls across the region | The hall door, and what the floor slab carries at each column |
| Extensions and link bridges | Hospital and university buildings kept in use | Surveyed connections on the frame being extended |
| Canopies taken down and re-sited | Dock estate yards being reorganised | What holds the remaining bays as each piece is freed |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page covers each stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Bristol
Bristol frames go up on six kinds of site.
Sheds and yards on the Avonmouth side
Warehouse frames, transport canopies and gatehouses go up on the Avonmouth and Portbury dock estates and Severnside plots, beside yards that keep working. See our maritime sector page.
Estuary energy and process plants
Pipe bridges, platforms and support frames for new vessels are erected on energy, process and utilities sites around Severnside, inside the outage the operator books. See our power and renewables and chemicals pages.
Test rigs and engineering halls
Mezzanines, test rig platforms and extra bays are added for engineering firms and aerospace suppliers around the region, while the hall keeps producing. See our aerospace sector page.
Harbourside and central schemes
Rooftop plant steel, light gauge infill and canopies go onto residential, student and commercial buildings around Temple Meads. See our construction sector page.
Data halls and laboratories
Generator decks, plant platforms and small extensions are added to data centres and to hospital and university laboratories, at hours the facilities managers agree. See our healthcare and pharma and data centre infrastructure pages.
Food and drink producers
New production lines need access platforms and equipment supports, and we erect them during the producer’s shutdown. See our food and beverages page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Bristol
Before a date goes in the diary for a Bristol frame, we settle these:
- Wind across the estuary plots. Flat ground at Avonmouth and Severnside gives the wind a clear run, and big LFS panels and slender purlins are the first loads it stops. Each day’s picks are set against the forecast.
- Slopes and made ground. A crane on a central hill is levelled before it lifts, which shifts the outrigger loads. Harbourside and dock land is reclaimed and older streets hide cellars, so mats are sized for each standing.
- Lifts planned ahead of fabrication. Crane positions and reach are fixed while the steel is still being detailed, so your fabricator can load each trailer in the order the gang needs it.
- Closures and the Clean Air Zone. A crane or trailer in the road needs permission from Bristol City Council, or from South Gloucestershire or North Somerset for plots at Severnside and Portbury, and we run the traffic management and road closure. Trailers bound for the charging zone are checked first.
- A stable part-frame overnight. Permanent bracing follows the erection closely, and any bay left unfinished at the end of a shift is guyed off against the estuary wind.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Where new steel joins a Bristol building that stays open, the existing frame is surveyed first for member sizes and connections. With no way in for a crane, members come through a roller door and go up on gantries and jacks, or the electric pick and carry crane places them between the benches of a working engineering hall.
Taking a frame down is planned member by member, so the bays that remain can stand on their own at every stage. Anything going back up is match-marked before it is unbolted.

Why Synergy
Why Bristol firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Used to dock and process sites. Our crews expect inductions and permits, and plan the erection around the client’s operation running beside it.
- Sheds and city plots. We put up frames on the estuary estates and rooftop steel on central schemes.
- One crew from lift plan to last bolt. The operatives who sling each member are the ones who bolt it up, working to the plan our appointed person wrote.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Bristol steel job can also use these services of ours:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Your drawings and steel schedule come to us with the site address and programme dates.
-
We visit to pick the crane standings, check the ground under them, the way in for trailers, room for lay-down and any overhead lines.
-
A lift plan follows from our appointed person, and the method statement and risk assessment go with it, including how the frame stays stable part-built.
-
Your fabricator loads to a delivery order we agree together.
-
Our gang erects the steel. Once the last bay is braced, lined and levelled, the next trade can start.
FAQs
Common questions
Our site is on one of the steep streets in the centre. Can a crane still set up there?
Yes. The slope changes how the crane is levelled and what it can place at radius, so we measure the gradient at the standing position on the site visit and pick the machine to suit.
We want our new Severnside shed clad as well. Can that go on the same order?
Yes. Cladding and roofing can join the steel package, programmed to follow the frame bay by bay. Send the cladding specification with the steel drawings and we will price the two together.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

A Bristol price starts from the general arrangement drawings and the member list. Add the site address, a note of whether the plot sits on a slope or out by the estuary, and the fortnight your programme has the steel going up.
We also provide steel erection in Newport, Cardiff, Bournemouth and Swansea. See all the steel erection locations.
