What dismantling covers
Plant is taken apart in the reverse of the order it was built up, which is how the value in it is kept. Equipment bound elsewhere comes off at its connections, marked, recorded and packed for re-erection. Machines with working life in them sell on as they stand, and the rest comes down as separated material, sized so it can be weighed and sold.

Access and planning for dismantling in Bristol
Before any cutting starts on a Bristol site:
- What the plant held. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification fall to the operator or a specialist, and cutting follows the certificates covering each stage, several of which run one shift only.
- Height, access and rescue. More of this work happens on structures than floors, so platform positions, edge protection, how a member is held as it is cut free and rescue go into the lift plan.
- Gradient, the gorge and the Clean Air Zone. Bristol is steep, so where a wagon stands and a crane levels up is settled at survey. The gorge narrows the crossings an oversized section can use, and the charging zone decides which vehicles run the job.
- Crane standing, ground bearing and the route off site. Reclaimed land by the water and vaulted pavements in the older streets both change what the ground takes, so mat sizes and bearing pressures are fixed before an outrigger goes down. Sections are sized to what can leave, with closures through Bristol City Council, South Gloucestershire or North Somerset.
- What stays standing. Plant carries loads no drawing shows, and an access platform can lean on the vessel coming out, so every stage is checked and temporary steel designed in where support falls short.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Where plant is going back up, that is settled before the method is written. Each item is match-marked and recorded as it is freed, joints are undone at flanges and bolts in place of the torch, and parts are crated for the road. Plant sold on as a working machine is handled the same way.
At the end of a plant’s life the value sits in segregation. Stainless goes one way and carbon steel another, cable and non-ferrous are boxed off before the mixed skip, and steel is sized so it can be weighed and sold. Common questions
Can a redundant unit at Severnside come out inside a booked outage?
Yes. The outage dates set the programme, certification dates are fixed with the operator, and the sequence is sized to the crew and craneage that fit the window.
How do cut sections leave a site on one of the steep central roads?
Gradient decides where a wagon stands level and how big each piece can be, so sections are sized at survey to what loads safely on the slope, and vehicles are checked against the Clean Air Zone.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
