What dismantling covers
The order of the work reverses the order the plant was built in, and that protects the value in it. Equipment bound for another site is freed at its connections, match-marked, recorded and packed, so the receiving end rebuilds from it. Machines with working life sell on as they stand, and the rest leaves as separated material, sized to be weighed and sold.

Access and planning for dismantling in Cardiff
What we settle in Cardiff before a cutter goes near the steel:
- Event days in the centre. Roads and access change on major event days, and dismantling brings cranes and wagons across the centre for weeks. We take the dates at enquiry and plan around them.
- Height, access and rescue. The cutting happens above floor level, so platform positions, edge protection, anchor points, how a member is held as it is cut and rescue go into the method statement.
- What the plant held. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification belong to the operator or a specialist and come before cutting. Several of those cover one shift, so the cutting order is booked to match.
- What is left holding what. Plant carries loads no drawing shows, so each stage is checked against the one before and temporary steel goes in where the remaining structure needs it.
- Crane standing, bearing and the route out. The dock estate and the Bay sit on made ground, and older central streets have cellars beneath the pavement, so bearing pressure is settled and mats laid before an outrigger goes down. Sections are sized to the route out, closures through Cardiff Council.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
When plant is going back up, at your works or a buyer’s, that decision shapes the method from the survey on. Items are marked and positions recorded as they come free, joints undone at flanges in place of the torch, and everything crated for the road. A machine sold on is handled the same way.
At the end of a plant’s life the money sits in keeping materials apart: stainless away from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous boxed off before the mixed skip, and steel cut to sizes that load and weigh. How a dismantling job works
- Tell us what the plant is, what ran through it and whether any is wanted back, with photographs or drawings.
- A survey follows, and from it the method and a sequence that leaves what stands stable after each cut.
- Method statement, risk assessment and lift plan go to you, the certificates settled with the site.
- On site the work runs in that order: isolate, cut, lift down, sort as it comes.

Common questions
Can plant come off the dock estate while cargo is still moving?
Yes. It is booked into the gaps between cargo movements with the port and the berth operator, and crane positions and quayside bearing are settled at survey.
How do event days in the centre affect a dismantling programme?
They fix the diary. Cutting and load-out days are set clear of them at survey. Closures come from Cardiff Council, or the Vale of Glamorgan at Penarth and Barry.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
