Access and planning for dismantling in Cumbria

What gets settled on a Cumbrian job before the first cut:

• Working at height, and getting someone down. Cutting positions sit on structures, tank shells and roofs, so access equipment, edge protection, anchor points, what holds each piece as it is released and rescue go in the method statement.
• Lanes, bridges and the coast road. The A595 is the only real route down the west side, while National Park stone bridges and passing places set the size of crane and wagon that gets there. Sections are cut to suit the way out.
• What was in it. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification belong to the operator or a specialist it appoints, and several cover one shift, so cutting follows those hours.
• What carries the load once a piece goes. Plant holds itself up in ways no drawing records, so each stage is checked for what the remaining steel takes on, with props and temporary steelwork drawn in.
• Crane standing, ground bearing and the load-out route. Fell-side and coastal yards give soft or made-up ground, so bearing pressures and mat sizes are set first. Road closures are arranged with Cumberland Council or Westmorland and Furness Council.

Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery

Plant going back up, at your site or a buyer’s, is surveyed with the rebuild in front of us. Every item is match-marked and its position logged, joints are parted at flanges and bolts wherever one will give, and parts are crated for the wagon and for storage.

Where nothing is being kept, the money is in separation. Stainless is kept away from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous go into containers of their own, and material is cut to lengths that load and weigh cleanly. Most Cumbrian jobs hold some of each, a turbine going for refurbishment while the screens and pipework around it are scrap. Say at the outset which of those matter and the sequence protects them on the way down.

How a dismantling job works

1. Send a list of the plant, what it held and which items are wanted again, with photographs or drawings.
2. We survey and develop the method and the cutting order, checking what the plant still standing carries.
3. Method statement, risk assessment and lift plan are issued, and certification dates fixed with the site.
4. Isolation comes first, then cutting, lifting down and sorting, with anything you are keeping taken off first.
5. Loading out closes the job, and what goes back up leaves crated and marked with its measurements.

Common questions

Can a crane reach plant at the end of a fell track?

Send the postcode and photographs of the approach and we will say what reaches it. Where a bridge rules out a larger machine, the work is built around a compact crane and smaller sections.

We are taking a line out of a Carlisle food factory over a shutdown. What is agreed first?

The hygiene boundary and the exclusion zone, the position on hot work, who certifies each vessel, and the hours the area is ours. Heavier sections sit in the quietest part of the window.

How is dismantling different from demolition?

Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.

Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?

Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
