Hartlepool has its own port and engineering base, and Billingham sits just across the A19. Jobs on this side of the river are usually plant replacement, tank and vessel work and maintenance lifts on operating sites.

Access and planning for lifts in Teesside

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Teesside jobs:

• Getting there. Cranes reach Teesside on the A66 and A19, with the A174 serving Redcar and the coast. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
• Permit-controlled sites. On chemical and process sites we work to site inductions, permits to work and exclusion zones, and fit lifts around shutdown and maintenance windows.
• Ground conditions. Much of the land along the Tees is reclaimed or former industrial ground and the records are not always complete. We check ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
• Wind off the estuary. Lifts near the river and the coast can be stopped by wind, so we plan around wind limits and build some flexibility into the programme.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland or Hartlepool council as part of the job.

Common questions

Do you cover the whole of Teesside or only Middlesbrough?

We cover the whole of Teesside, including Stockton-on-Tees, Thornaby, Billingham, Hartlepool, Redcar, Yarm and Eaglescliffe, as well as Middlesbrough itself. Send us the site postcode and we’ll quote for it.

Can you work during a plant shutdown?

Yes. Shutdown work is a normal part of what we do on Teesside. Give us the window and the lift details and we’ll plan the crane, the route and the set-up around it, including out-of-hours working where the site needs it.

Which crane suits a lift inside a process plant?

It depends on the weight, the reach and how much room there is to set up. City cranes and pick and carry machines suit confined areas between plant, while a larger all-terrain crane set up outside the unit can often reach further in.
