What a machine move involves

The order is the same on every job. The machine is disconnected and made safe, rigged and extracted, transported, then positioned, levelled and set down on its mounts. Some need a crane and a low loader. Others never leave the building and cross the floor on jacks, skates and gantries, depending on the weight and the route out.

Hartlepool has its own port and engineering base, with Billingham just across the A19. We replace tanks and machinery on operating sites there and clear out equipment when a works closes or changes hands.

Teesside Estate on the A19, Mandale Park beside the A66 and the estates round Thornaby and Stockton are full of manufacturers and engineering firms. Access and planning for a machine move in Teesside

Points we check on most Teesside jobs:

Getting loads in and out. The A66 and A19 carry heavy loads into the valley, with the A174 serving Redcar and the coast. Low bridges, weight limits, river crossings and gate turning space are checked before we quote.
Permit-controlled sites. On chemical and process sites we work under the site’s induction and permit-to-work system, and plan the move around the shutdown dates you give us.
Floors and ground. Records for reclaimed and former industrial land can be incomplete. We confirm what a slab or standing will carry and spread the load with mats or steel plate.
Working hours and weather. Night and weekend moves suit plants that cannot stop in the week. Near the river mouth, high wind stops crane lifts, so we allow a spare day.
Road closures. We book the traffic management and apply for the closure through whichever council covers the road: Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Cleveland or Hartlepool.

Moving large or heavy machinery by road

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. From Teesside, heavy loads usually leave west on the A66 for the A1(M), or north and south on the A19.

Can you move equipment on a permit-controlled process site?

Yes. Our crews complete the site induction and work under your permits to work. Give us the shutdown dates and we will plan the move inside them, working nights and weekends where needed.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?

Yes. A breakdown goes to the front of the queue because production has stopped. From Darlington we offer same-day breakdown attendance on Teesside. Call with the machine details and we will confirm a time on the phone.
