The machine is disconnected and made safe, then rigged and jacked or lifted out. It travels to its new position, where it is levelled and set on its mounts. Moves between sites bring in a crane and a low loader, while a move between bays can be done on jacks, skates and a gantry. Access and planning for a machine move in Oxford

Points we check on most Oxford jobs:

Getting loads in and out. No motorway runs through Oxford. Heavy loads reach the ring road from the M40 by the A34 or A40, or come in on the A44 or A420, and the ring road is congested for much of the day, so arrival times are planned.
The city centre. The zero emission zone, bus-only streets and pedestrianised areas limit which vehicles can reach a central building and where they can stand. We check both before a date is set.
Floors and ground. Old suspended floors in the centre and soft ground by the Thames and the Cherwell are checked before a skate route or crane position is fixed, with plates or mats to spread the load.
Working times. Hospitals and colleges want moves outside their busiest hours, and factories want them inside a shutdown.
Road closures. If a load-out needs part of a road or pavement, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Oxfordshire County Council.

Moving large or heavy machinery by road

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. From Oxford, heavy loads usually take the A34 north or south, or join the M40 near Wheatley or Bicester.

Common questions

Can you move a machine into a building in central Oxford?

Yes. We check the vehicle and where it can legally stand, then measure the route through the building. If a doorway is too tight, the machine goes in sections or a compact city crane lifts it in.

Can you move our workshop to a new unit elsewhere in Oxfordshire?

Yes. We survey both sites, agree the order in which machines leave and arrive, and mark out the new floor with you so each one goes straight to its place. If the new unit is not ready, we can store the machines until it is.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?

Yes. Breakdown work is prioritised because production has usually stopped. Call us with the machine details and we will give you a firm attendance time on the call.
