Access and planning for lifts in Oxford

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Oxford jobs:

• Getting there. There is no motorway through the city. Cranes reach the ring road from the M40 by the A34 or A40, or come in on the A44 or A420, and the ring road is congested for much of the day, so timing is part of the plan.
• The city-centre zone. Central Oxford has a zero emission zone and a good deal of pedestrianised and bus-only street, so vehicle compliance and the approach both get checked before a date is agreed.
• Listed buildings and oversail. Lifting into a quadrangle usually means passing over a listed roof, which needs the building owner’s agreement and a method that protects the fabric. We work the radius and the load path out early.
• Live hospital sites. Standing positions, exclusion zones and timings get agreed with the estates team before anything is booked, and evening or weekend working is often the easier route.
• Ground and road closures. The land along the Thames and the Cherwell is low-lying and soft in places, so we confirm ground bearing and use crane mats where needed. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Oxfordshire County Council as part of the job.

Common questions

Can you lift into a college quadrangle?

Often, yes, but it depends on the street outside and what the boom has to pass over. Send us the address, the load details and photos of the approach and the roofline, and we’ll tell you what is workable before dates are fixed.

Does the city-centre zone affect a crane job?

It affects the vehicles and the approach rather than the lift. We check compliance and routing as part of the quote so it does not become a problem on the day.

Can you lift on a hospital site while it is open?

Yes, and that is how most Headington work happens. The standing position, the exclusion zone, the route for the load and the timing get agreed with the estates team in advance.
