Access and planning for lifts in Stoke

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Stoke jobs:

• Getting there. Junctions 15 and 16 of the M6 serve the city, with the A500 linking them through the middle and the A50 running east towards Derby. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.

Common questions

Can you get a kiln section out of an old works building?

Usually, but the route out decides the job. Low headroom, narrow openings and an old floor often mean skates or jacking inside the building and the crane working from the yard. Send us photos of the opening and the approach and we’ll tell you how we would do it.

Is made ground a problem for crane set-up?

It can be, which is why we check rather than assume. Former colliery, marl and pottery waste ground changes what the ground will carry, so we look at ground bearing, plan the outrigger positions and use crane mats where the bearing is marginal.

Can you work through a shutdown?

Yes, and that is when most of this work happens. Give us the window and the lift details and we’ll plan the crane, the route and the set-up around it, including nights and weekends where the works needs it.
