Overview
Steel erection in Newport and across Gwent
Newport’s steel goes up on the estates either side of the Usk and up the valleys behind the city. Food, drink, packaging and engineering firms on the Queensway Meadows, Spytty, Leeway, Magor and Cwmbran estates need portal frames, extensions and mezzanines, and metals and clean manufacturing firms add platforms and support steel inside running plants.
The steel your fabricator has made is erected by our own gangs, with the lifts planned in-house, on jobs as small as a canopy or as big as a new packaging hall at Magor. We work across Newport, Caerleon, Rogerstone and Langstone, and out to Caldicot, Cwmbran, Pontypool and Chepstow. Drawings and photographs of the site let us price a new unit on Queensway Meadows, often within the working day.
What steel erection covers
We stand and bolt up the frame, check it for line and level, and add the bracing and secondary steel, including LFS and SFS light gauge framing. Old frames come down as well, often when a plant at Spytty changes its production layout. Cladding and roofing can be added.
What we do
What we erect in Newport
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Cold stores and packing halls | The Spytty, Leeway and Queensway Meadows estates | Where the first braced bay sits, and how far the crane moves between picks |
| Line platforms and equipment steel | Coating and fabrication units | The planned outage and the space left around the line |
| Walkways and service frames | Clean manufacturing halls | Process equipment staying in place around each new member |
| Extensions and extra bays | Engineering units at Rogerstone, Magor and Cwmbran | The existing columns the new steel connects to |
| Rooftop plant steel and link bridges | Hospitals, colleges and schools across the county | Lifting hours and where the building must stay open |
| Mezzanines taken down and re-erected | Units changing hands on the Gwent estates | Match-marks, and which bays hold while members are released |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Newport
We put up steel on these kinds of Newport site.
Food and packaging units by the river
Portal frames, loading canopies and cold store extensions go up for food, drink and packaging operations on the Spytty, Leeway and Queensway Meadows estates. See our food and beverages page.
Metal finishing and fabrication units
Access platforms, gantry supports and line steel go into coating, fabrication and stockholding units in the metals supply chain, inside the outage each plant plans. See our plastics and metals page.
Estates up the valleys
New workshops, extensions and mezzanine floors are erected for engineering and trade firms at Rogerstone, Cwmbran and Pontypool. See our industrial sector page.
Clean manufacturing halls
Walkways and service frames go into filtered-air production halls, threaded between process equipment that stays in place. See our HVAC page.
Docks and the riverside
Stores, canopies and handling shelters are put up on the dock estate and riverside yards, planned around berth activity. See our maritime sector page.
Schools, clinics and central regeneration
Plant decks and link steel go onto school, college and health buildings in Newport, Torfaen and Monmouthshire, timed around the school or clinic day, and frames go up on regeneration plots in the centre. See our healthcare and pharma and construction pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Newport
These points shape a Newport steel programme from the start:
- Soft ground on the levels. The levels to the south and east are river silt cut by drainage reens, so the ground at every crane standing is confirmed and mats are sized to it.
- Getting the steel to site. Steel from an English fabricator crosses the Severn on the M4 or M48 bridge, and strong wind over the estuary can shut either to high-sided lorries. Long or wide members may also have to avoid the Brynglas tunnels. We agree the route with your fabricator before the trailers are booked.
- Big panels on breezy days. Large LFS panels and light secondary members go up only when the wind at height allows, and each day’s sequence is planned from the forecast.
- Stability whenever work stops. The part-erected frame stands on its own at each break, with temporary bracing or guys wherever the permanent bracing is still to go in.
- Lift plan before the steel order. Our appointed person sets crane positions and reach early, so the fabricator loads each trailer in erection order.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Steel added to a Newport building in use ties into the existing frame, and we survey its member sizes and connections before anything is designed. For a mezzanine or platform deep inside the building, the steel is walked in through the loading door and lifted on gantries and jacks. The electric pick and carry crane is the other option, with no exhaust, so a food unit at Spytty keeps producing beside the work.
Where steel has to come out, the order is set by what stays up: each member is released only once the remaining frame is stable without it. Anything due to be re-erected is match-marked on the way down.

Why Synergy
Why Newport firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Units from Spytty to Cwmbran. Food, packaging and engineering firms on the Gwent estates get portal frames, extensions and mezzanines from us.
- Steel into plants that keep running. Platforms and support steel go into working production halls inside the outage you give us.
- Lift planning and erection in one team. The gang on site works out the sequence with our appointed person, so the lift plan follows the erection order.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Newport steel projects can add any of these:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
First we need drawings and a steel schedule, plus the address and the programme you are working to.
-
A walk round the site settles crane positions, what the ground will bear, how deliveries get in, where steel can be laid down and what runs overhead.
-
Our appointed person writes the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment follow from it, showing how the frame stays stable as it grows.
-
Your fabricator gets a loading order from us, agreed before the first trailer is packed.
-
Our erectors put the steel up and brace it, and the frame is handed on once it is lined and levelled.
FAQs
Common questions
Queensway Meadows is low, soft ground. How does a crane stand safely on our plot there?
Each crane position is checked against whatever site investigation you hold, and the outrigger loads are spread on mats sized for that ground. If there is none, tell us early so the standings can be planned before the crane is booked.
We need a canopy over our yard at the docks. Can it go up around shipping?
Yes. Lifts are booked around berth and cargo activity, and the port’s induction and permit requirements are written into the method statement. Give us a contact at the dock early so the dates can be agreed with them.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
