Access and planning for dismantling in Newcastle
On a Newcastle job these get agreed before any cutting starts:
- Working at height and rescue. Much of this happens up on structures, so platform positions, edge protection, how each piece is held as it is cut and rescue go into the plan.
- What the plant held. Gas-free certification, cleaning and purging are down to the site operator or a specialist, and cutting is timed to the shift a certificate covers.
- Crane standing and ground bearing. Quayside edges, reclaimed ground and cellars under city footways are checked before the crane position is settled, with mats sized to the pressure below. Road space for the load-out is arranged with Newcastle City Council or Gateshead Council.

Items are match-marked and their positions recorded as they are released, connections undone at flanges and bolts instead of cut, and parts crated for the road. Machines sold on get the same handling.
Where plant has finished its life, the value is in segregation. Stainless is held back from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous fill their own containers away from the mixed skip, and the remainder is cut to sizes a weighbridge takes. Yard room on the Tyneside estates is tight, so containers stand where the wagons reach. List the items you want back with the enquiry, and the sequence is built around getting those off whole.

Common questions
Can the overhead crane go when we hand a Team Valley unit back?
Yes. List it at survey with whatever else the landlord wants cleared. The crane and runway steel come down first, then the decking, then services capped back to the schedule.
Our works is on the quay. Will the ground take a crane?
Quay edges and reclaimed ground vary over a few metres, so that is checked before a position is picked. Where the bearing falls short, the crane stands back on mats with more boom.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
