Access and planning for a factory move in Portsmouth

Which crossing each load takes. Everything bound for the island comes over at Hilsea, on the Eastern Road or down the M275, so each load gets a crossing and an arrival time, and the widest items keep off the peaks.
What has to be finished before the first load. Floor, machine bases, power, air and a clear way in all carry dates, and the receiving unit is checked against them as the move nears.
Getting each machine to the door. Shutter widths, headroom under beams, yard space and whether a roof panel can come off decide how each item leaves, and that goes on the asset register.
Floors on both sides of the harbour. Jacks and skates concentrate the weight into a handful of points, and the low-lying ground by the harbour has been built up in places, so slabs inside and standings outside are checked at both ends.
Street space and notified loads. Where loading takes part of a road we arrange traffic management and closure with Portsmouth City Council, or Hampshire County Council for Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Waterlooville. Abnormal loads are notified where needed.

Keeping production going during the move

A relocation here is normally built in stages. The machines with the most slack go first and are producing at the new address while the others carry on, and anything that can only stop briefly is booked into a weekend or your shutdown. Common questions

We are clearing a unit on Portsea Island. When do the loads travel?

Each load gets a crossing and an arrival time when the programme is written. Wide or tall items travel early or late in the day, when the approaches are clear.

We are not leaving the Portchester unit, only changing its layout. Is that the same job?

Yes. The machines are surveyed where they stand, then lifted or skated to their new bays and set to line on fresh bases, with the order worked out so the floor keeps running.

Can we keep producing while we move?

In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.

How are disconnection and recommissioning handled?

We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
