What we did

Synergy Lifting were appointed by a new customer to carry out a contract lift at Alwent Beck. The scope involved lifting a large prefabricated pipe bridge from a laydown area and positioning it into its final elevated location on site. Due to the length of the bridge and the lift radius involved, careful planning and a specialist lifting arrangement were required to ensure safe control throughout the operation.

The pipe bridge measured approximately 28 metres long by 5 metres wide and weighed 24te. It required lifting to a working radius of 20 metres.

Key challenges included the long-spanning load requiring a multi-point lifting arrangement and lifting over Alwent Beck. Given the scale and geometry of the load, maintaining structural integrity and load stability throughout the lift was critical.

How we did it

Crane

Following full planning and site assessment, we selected a 250 tonne Grove GMK5250L mobile crane for the operation. For the main lift, the crane was configured with 80 tonnes of counterweight and 42.3m of main boom telescoped out to give a capacity of 29.3te at a 21m radius.

Rigging Equipment

Due to the 28m span of the pipe bridge, a complex spreader beam configuration was designed to distribute loads evenly and prevent distortion. This included a 16m long 45te capacity top spreader beam and two 4.5m long 19te capacity bottom spreader beams.
