Planning

Access and planning for a machine move in Dover

Points we check on most Dover jobs:

Getting loads in and out. Heavy loads come in on the A20 from the M20 or the A2 from Canterbury, and the A256 runs north to Sandwich and Thanet. Both main roads carry Channel freight, so we choose the day and hour around it and check bridges and weight limits on the way.
Steep and narrow streets. The town sits in a valley between chalk cliffs, and some streets are too steep or tight for a long trailer, so we fix a standing spot at survey stage.
Floors and ground. Chalk, made ground near the seafront and older suspended floors all get checked before we set a skate route or put a crane outrigger down.
Shutdown time. Setting up and packing away eat into any production stop, so we count them in the programme from the start and give you a time the machine will be running again.

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. Out of Dover, heavy loads take the A20 towards Folkestone and the M20, or the A2 towards Canterbury and the M2.

Will freight traffic hold up our machine delivery?

It can, so we plan for it. The trailer’s arrival is timed to miss the heaviest freight on the A20 and A2, with a fallback slot agreed in case the approach roads back up.

Can you move machinery at a coastal or marine site?

Yes. On exposed ground we check the wind forecast and the tide, confirm what the hardstanding will carry, and set out the lift and transport in the method statement.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?
