Access and planning for dismantling in Oxford
Agreed in Oxford before a saw or a torch comes out:
- Residues, purging and the certificates. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification are the operator’s work or a specialist’s, and a certificate may cover one shift, so the programme follows those dates.
- Where the crane sets up and how sections leave. Riverside land by the Thames and the Cherwell goes soft under an outrigger, so bearing pressures are calculated and mats laid to suit. Road closures go through Oxfordshire County Council.
- The central zone and the roads in. The city has no motorway of its own, so vehicles leave the M40 for the A34 or A40 and reach a ring road that is slow much of the day. A central address brings in the zero emission zone and streets kept for buses.
- Support going in as the sequence runs. Very little plant stands on its own once its neighbours go, so the survey settles what carries the load at each stage and temporary steel goes in first.
- Height, edge protection and getting someone down. Work above floor level needs platform positions, a way of holding each member as it is cut, and a rescue plan.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Where plant is going back up, the method is built around rebuilding it. Every item takes a number, its position is logged and photographed as it comes off, and joints are undone at flanges and bolts wherever a cut can be avoided. Parts are crated for the road, so a skid leaving an Osney Mead unit for a sister plant arrives with its record.
Plant at the end of its life pays according to how cleanly it is parted out. Stainless is stacked away from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous keep out of the mixed skip, and material is cut down to weighable sizes. Nearly every job mixes the two, so the items you intend to keep are agreed at survey and the order of work protects them.

How a dismantling job works
- Describe the plant, say what it held and mark anything being kept, with photographs or drawings.
- A survey produces the method, fixing where the plant breaks and an order that leaves what remains stable at each stage.

Common questions
Our building is inside the zero emission zone. Does that change how the job runs?
It affects the vehicles and the approach more than the cutting. We check what can reach the address and where it can legally stand while quoting, then book a crane and lorries that comply. Photographs of the frontage are enough to start.
How do oversized sections get out of Oxford?
The route off site is settled at survey and the plant cut to suit it. Wagons run out to the A34 or pick up the M40 near Wheatley, and any notification goes in through your haulier.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
