Access and planning for a lift and shift in Bristol

Points we check on most Bristol jobs:

Buildings on a hillside. In Clifton, Totterdown and parts of the centre a building’s street door can be two floors above or below its plant room. The lorry may stand on a slope, so the item comes off onto level ground first.
Floor loading and what lies beneath. Ground by the harbour is made up, and many old buildings in the centre sit over cellars or vaults. We check what carries the route and lay mats or steel tracks where the figures need them.
Headroom and the route. We measure clearance with the item on the equipment, and every door, landing and turn to the base.
Working around the occupants. Hospitals, labs and offices stay in use, so the move is timed around their day.
Road space and vehicles. Vehicles for central jobs are checked against the Clean Air Zone. If the lorry needs road or pavement space, we apply to Bristol City Council, or South Gloucestershire or North Somerset Council beyond the boundary.

Getting it where it needs to go

A Bristol job can run in either direction: new plant in, old plant out, or both in one visit with the old unit leaving the way the new one arrived. Some never go indoors, such as a transformer moved across a yard onto its plinth or a unit craned to a roof and skated to its frame.

Inside, expect basement stairs under sloping streets, small goods lifts in converted harbourside warehouses, mezzanines in north fringe units, split levels, raised floors and doorways tighter than the plans say. Gantries, jacks, rollers and skates get most items past, with a crane where it helps. Failing that, a door frame is stripped back and made good, or the item goes through in sections.

Common questions

Our plant room is below street level on a steep road. Can you reach it?

Yes. We look at where the lorry can stand level, the way down, any hatch or lifting beam and the floors on the route, then decide whether the unit goes down whole or in pieces. Photos of the street and the way down are enough to start.

Can you change switchgear during a planned outage?

Yes. Give us the outage dates and we plan the removal and the new installation to fit inside them, with the new panels staged close by so the switchroom is empty for as short a time as possible.

How much headroom do you need?

Less than most people expect, but it decides the method. What counts is the gap between the top of the item and the lowest obstruction on the route once the item is on the equipment. Where it is tight we use a low-headroom gantry or jacks and lift in smaller steps.

Will you damage our floor?

Not if the route is prepared, and that preparation is part of the price. We spread the load with mats or tracks where the slab needs it, protect finished surfaces, and agree beforehand what gets covered and what gets made good.
