Access and planning for lifts on Deeside

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Deeside jobs:

• Two countries, two sets of rules. Sites a few miles apart can sit under Flintshire, Cheshire West or Wrexham, and an abnormal load notification or a road closure has to go to the right authority. We handle that as part of the job, but it is why we ask which side of the border a site is on before anything else.
• The A494 and Aston Hill. The main approach from the east climbs and narrows, and with the A55 and A548 it gives us three ways in that suit different load sizes. We match the route to the load rather than the other way round.
• Reclaimed estuary ground. The industrial park and much of the working frontage sit on made-up marshland threaded with drainage. Outrigger loading behaves differently there, so bearing pressures get confirmed and mats used where the figures require.
• Tides on the Dee. Anything on or beside the water or in the dock areas is planned around the tidal window, with rescue provision and edge protection in the lift plan.
• Working inside precision environments. On the aerospace and engine sites the floor, the cleanliness and the vibration matter as much as the capacity, and the machine is chosen for the building as much as the load.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or footway closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Flintshire County Council, Cheshire West and Chester or Wrexham as the site requires.

Common questions

Does it matter which side of the border the site is on?

For the lift itself, no. For the permissions, yes: abnormal load notifications and road closures go to different authorities in Wales and England, with different notice periods. We deal with it, but it is the first thing we ask.

Can you work inside the aerospace and engine plants?

Yes. Those buildings set the terms — floor loadings, cleanliness, restricted routes and in places overhead structure that limits the boom — so we choose the machine for the building and plan the rigging for the final position rather than the pick.

Can you handle an outage on a steel or power plant?

Yes. Give us the window, the equipment weights and the access route into the hall, and we will plan the lift and any machine moving or dismantling around it as one sequence rather than separate jobs.
