Access and planning for lifts in Grimsby

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Grimsby jobs:

• Getting there. The M180 becomes the A180 and runs along the bank into the town, with the A160 dropping off it for Immingham and Killingholme. It is a good road for an abnormal load, which is not something we say about many places, but the dock gates and the estate roads beyond them are the slow part and that is where the time goes.
• Rail on the dock estate. The bulk terminals are rail-served, and level crossings and train paths sit across the routes a crane needs. We check the crossing restrictions and the pathing before committing to a set-up position.
• Wind on an open bank. There is nothing between the Humber and the working areas to break the wind. We take the limit from the crane’s chart and the sail area of the load, and agree up front what happens if the forecast moves against us.
• Secure port estates. Immingham and the Grimsby docks operate their own access, vehicle and escort rules, and the lead time on clearance is part of the programme rather than an afterthought. Tell us what your site requires and we will build it into the plan.
• Made ground near the water. Much of the bank is reclaimed, and outrigger loads on made ground behave differently from the same lift inland. We confirm ground bearing and use crane mats where the figures call for it.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or footway closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with North East Lincolnshire Council as part of the job.

Common questions

Can you lift over a running freezer or production line?

Usually, yes, and it is most of what we do on the processing estates. We plan the exclusion zone, the route the load takes and the position the crane sits in so the line underneath can keep working, and where that is not achievable we say so early and plan for the shutdown instead.

Can you work inside the Immingham or Grimsby dock estates?

Yes. Those estates run their own access, vehicle and escort rules and are rail-served, so the plan has to account for clearance lead times and level crossings as well as the lift. Tell us the berth or terminal and what the site requires and we will build it into the lift plan.

How far ahead do you need to know about a turnaround?

The earlier the better, because the crane is rarely the constraint. On the Killingholme and Stallingborough sites the permits, the isolation and the sequence decide when the lift can happen, so if you bring us in while the window is still being planned we can usually fit around it rather than asking you to move it.
