Access and planning for lifts in Wolverhampton
Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Wolverhampton jobs:
- The Metro and overhead lines. The tram route runs through the city and out towards Bilston and Birmingham. Lifts near it need clearance distances, and sometimes an isolation, agreed in advance, which takes lead time.
- Getting there. The M6 at junctions 10 and 11 and the M54 serve the city, with the A449, A454 and A4123 feeding in. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
- Made ground and old workings. The Black Country is built on former mining and heavy industry, with made ground, old workings and buried foundations. What the ground will carry is not obvious, so we check ground bearing and plan the outrigger positions rather than assume.
- Canals and bridges. The canal network crosses much of the area, which limits which bridges an abnormal load can use, and some works yards are hemmed in by a cut.
- Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with the City of Wolverhampton Council or the neighbouring Black Country councils as part of the job.

Common questions
Can you lift near the Metro lines?
Yes, with the clearances agreed beforehand. The overhead lines set a minimum distance for the boom and the load, and some positions need an isolation arranging, so the earlier we have the address the better.
Is old mine working a problem for crane set-up?
It can be, which is why we check rather than assume. Made ground and old workings change what the ground will carry, so we look at ground bearing, plan the outrigger positions and use crane mats where the bearing is marginal.
Can you get a press out of an older works building?
Usually, but the route out decides the job. Low headroom, narrow openings and an old floor often mean skates or jacking inside and the crane working from the yard. Send us photos of the opening and the approach and we’ll tell you how we would do it.
