Access and planning for lifts in Sheffield

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Sheffield jobs:

• Getting there. Most cranes reach Sheffield on the M1 between junctions 31 and 36 and come in on the Parkway or the Tinsley approaches. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
• Gradients. Sheffield is built on hills, and a sloping street or yard changes where a crane can stand, how it is levelled and what it can lift. We check the set-up position rather than assume it.
• Tram lines and overhead cables. Tram overhead lines run through much of the centre and out along the Don Valley. Working near them means clearance distances, and sometimes an isolation, agreed in advance.
• Ground conditions. The valley floor is largely made ground on old industrial land, with culverts and buried foundations. We confirm ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Sheffield City Council as part of the job.

Common questions

Can you lift near the tram lines?

Yes, with the clearances agreed beforehand. Overhead lines set a minimum distance for the boom and the load, and on some positions an isolation is needed. Tell us the address and we’ll check it as part of the lift plan.

My yard slopes. Is that a problem?

Not usually, but it changes the plan. Gradient affects levelling, outrigger loads and how much the crane can safely lift at radius, so we would rather see photos and a rough idea of the slope early than find out on the day.

Can you get a machine out of an old works building?

Often, yes. Low headroom, tight doorways and old floors are common in the Don Valley, and the answer is usually a combination of skates or jacking inside the building and a crane outside. Send us the machine weight and photos of the route out and we’ll tell you how we’d do it.
