Access and planning for dismantling in Southampton

Settled on a Southampton job before any cutting starts:

• What was inside the plant. Purging, cleaning, testing and gas-free certification are the operator’s job, or a specialist’s, and cutting is programmed inside the window each certificate covers.
• Crane standing, ground bearing and the way off site. Land beside the water is made ground, so bearing pressures and mat sizes are fixed before an outrigger goes down. Sections suit the route out to the M27, and closures go through Southampton City Council or Hampshire County Council.
• Vessel movements and turnaround days. Dock roads fill when a ship turns round, so lifts and lorry movements go on quieter days, and passes and inductions start once the date is agreed.
• Height, access and rescue. Cutting happens above floor level here, so the lift plan sets out the platforms, the edge protection, what takes a member’s weight as it is freed, and how a casualty is recovered.
• Stability as the sequence goes on. What holds a structure up shows itself once something is taken out, so the removal order is worked stage by stage, with temporary steelwork where needed.

Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery

A rebuild at the other end changes the method: each item match-marked and logged in position as it is freed, joints undone at flanges and bolts where the connection allows, parts crated for the road. A machine going to a buyer is handled on the same basis.

Once a plant is finished with, the return depends on how cleanly the materials part. Stainless is kept off carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous go to their own containers well before the mixed skip, and the steel leaves in sizes a weighbridge takes. Southampton jobs regularly carry both aims, a workshop’s overhead crane sold on while the steel around it goes for grade. Name the pieces you expect to use again, and the sequence puts them in the yard whole while the rest stands.

How a dismantling job works

1. Send a description of the plant, what ran through it, the items you are keeping and any photographs.
2. The survey settles the method: where the plant breaks, what needs propping, and an order that keeps the rest standing.
3. Lift plan, risk assessment, method statement and certificate dates go to the site for agreement.
4. The plant is isolated, cut and lowered in that order, materials kept apart as they come off.
5. Loading out finishes the job, and anything bound for re-erection leaves marked, recorded and packed.

Common questions

What happens on a turnaround day in the docks?

Estate roads fill with coaches and passengers, so lifts and lorry movements go elsewhere in the week and the crews cut on inside the area we hold. The programme is set once the movements are published, with passes and inductions sorted beforehand.

Can plant come out of a hospital or university building while it stays open?

Yes. The estates team sets the hours, the working area is fenced off, and the route out stays clear of wards, labs, offices and teaching space. Sections are sized to what the goods lift or stair core will pass, and saws and shears replace the torch where hot work is refused.

How is dismantling different from demolition?

Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.

Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?

Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
