Access and planning for lifts in York

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on York jobs:

• Getting there. Most cranes reach York on the A64, with the A19 north and south, the A59 from the west and the A1237 outer ring road for moving between sites. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
• The walled centre. The bars through the city walls have height and width limits, several streets are one-way or pedestrian for much of the day, and there is rarely more than one workable standing position. We settle that first, because it decides the machine.
• The Ouse and the Foss. Riverside sites bring flood defences, embankments and soft or made ground. We check ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
• Working out of hours. Early mornings, evenings and Sundays are often the only realistic windows in the centre, so we plan for lighting, noise and marshalling.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with City of York Council as part of the job.

Common questions

Can you get a crane inside the city walls?

Often, yes, but it depends on the route in and where the crane can stand. Height and width limits at the bars, one-way streets and pedestrian hours all come into it. Send us the address and photos of the street and we’ll tell you what is workable before you commit to a date.

Do you arrange road closures in York?

Many lifts don’t need one. If yours does need part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and apply to City of York Council for the closure, and we’ll tell you at quote stage.

Can you work on a school or university site in the holidays?

Yes, and that is when most of this work happens. Plant replacement and modular building lifts are easier with the site quiet, so give us the shutdown dates and we’ll plan the lift into them.
