What we did

Synergy Lifting were contacted by a regular client to assist with replacing some plant in a rooftop plantroom. The original install had been done utilising the tower crane during the construction phase – however, this had since been dismantled.

The plant to be removed and replaced inside this plantroom included gas heaters, calorifier skids, and a buffer vessel. The new kit was manufactured ahead of time so we actually took delivery of this at our yard and stored it in the interim period. We then transported the new plant to site when the lift went ahead.

To reach up to the top of the 64m high building we utilised a 230te crane with 37te of counterweight and a 20m swing away fly jib offset at a 40 degree angle. This allowed us to reach to the plantroom entrance where we were then able to perform ingress and positioning with skates, jacks, and our usual lift and shift tackle.

This ingress and egress was made a little bit more challenging because of a single step leading up to the threshold and then three steps leading into the plantroom. However, we attended site the day beforehand to prepare a landing platform to help overcome this hurdle.

How we did it

Plant and Equipment

Because of the height of the building and the position of the plantroom entrance at roof level, it was immediately apparent that a large crane with offset fly jib would be required. We did also assess other options, such as setting a crane up on Pilgrim Street instead of setting it up on the site but unfortunately this did not add any benefit.

We utilised a 230te crane with some additional counterweight and a 20m swing away fly jib for these lifting operations that took place on two separate visits. Due to the ground sloping away from the crane, we had to set the fly jib up in a particular direction. We also had to restrict slewing to a certain direction because of other operations being carried out on site.

As well as the crane and ballast transport, we also provided transport to bring the new plant to site from our storage yard. We also provided suitable skates, jacks, etc. to carry out lift and shift operations inside the plantroom too.

Labour

As well as mapping the ground level out for the crane position, our appointed person also had to map the roof level and plantroom out in detail to make sure we could reach to the plantroom entrance and safely shift the equipment in and out.

On the day of the main lifting operations, our operatives included a crane supervisor, crane operator, transport drivers, slinger signallers, and additional riggers.

How we can help you

This plant replacement project called on us to provide more than just a contract lift. We also provided interim storage, transport, and a lift & shift service. These particular services are just a small part of what we can provide. We can also strip out old plantrooms and remove/dispose of redundant plant off site. Or, we can even provide a more basic service – sometimes our lift and shift crew can utilise an on site tower crane if the project is at construction phase. Needless to say, we can help with whatever resources your operation needs at whatever stage your project is at.

Our team are experienced with lifting and shifting all types of HVAC plant – AHUs, chillers, buffer vessels, ASHPs, WSHPs, condensers, boilers, and all the rest.
